Noisy Sqeezebox

So my SB is being noisy. It is causing a soft static like sound to come from my speakers when it is on. I have also switched it out for another and the sound is still there. I have a long network cable that I hook up briefly last night and it was still there. I am not sure if it was still operating wireless or not. Is there a way to tell that it is operating via wire? It was not so bad but I have introduced a pre and it has magnified the noise. I am not planing on using the pre much but I would like to get rid of this buzzzzzz. Any suggestions would be great.

I had the same problem with my SB2. I connected it via Ethernet and I can no longer hear the static. You will need to reconfigure the SB for Ethernet by holding the left arrow on the remote down until the setup screen appears. You will now be able to select wireless or Ethernet. Selecting Ethernet that should turn the wireless card off. Hopefully this will help.

I had some of this problem.  It seems it might be wireless interference, in which case switching it to wired operation would help.  But it might also be interference caused by the display.  Try switching the display off (turn down the brightness) and see if that makes a difference.

Which version of the Squeeze Box are you using?

I have a few different SB2's and haven't had any noise issues.

However,  all have been modified by Wayne at Bolder Cable or Vinnie at Red Wine Audio.

Could this be a ground loop? Is everything plugged into the same outlet? What changed from when you used your SB before the hum started?

To be honest I have no clue what a ground loop sounds like. Does it sound like static from the tweeter? Also I have both a SB2 and SD3. If you do think its a ground loop what should I target as a fix?

hi sts9fan,

Funny you should mention this. I am just testing various PSUs on my SB3 and at the moment I am using an old computer PSU. It is causing funny noises especially when the SB is rebooting. As each line of text scrolls I'm getting a scrapping noise. Try moving you PSU around.

The standard PSU and a linear supply don't make a noise, well I haven't noticed any.  :D

BTW: The computer PSU sounds quite good IMHO, shame about the noises and fan.

It could be a ground loop. Do a search here or on AVSforum where there should be plenty of advice. I think it has to do with the electrical outlets and the ground plug (3rd connector on electrical plug). A 3 to 2 plug adapter might solve the problem but then you lose the ground, which may be bad. Plug only the SB3 and amp into a single outlet and have no other wires connected to the system (except speaker cable) and see if the noise goes away. You would have to use the wireless connection for music. If the problem goes away, at least you know that a ground loop is the issue. There are much more qualified people than me to explain and troubleshoot ground loops.

Good luck.

I will try these suggestions and do some research on ground loops. Thanks for the advise

I had static for a few seconds every time I selected a new song.  The squeezebox was right next to my tube preamp.  I moved the squeezebox to a shelf above the preamp and the problem went away.  I never figured out the cause, but assume it had something to do with the wireless signal causing interference.  I plan to hard wire a Transporter I just ordered.  I heard a friend's and it sounds as good as all the raving reviews I've been reading.

You're going to really like the Transporter. Mine is really nice.

My friend has an excellent 2 channel system, but I've always liked my system better (probably because I had a better CD Player), although our speakers and components are similar.  His new transporter is a major improvement over his CD Player or Squeezebox + DAC.  He says it is the most significant stereo upgrade he has ever purchased since he started pursuing this hi-fi hobby a few years ago.  His system now sounds much better than mine in all aspects: clarity, imaging, soundstage.  This is not acceptable, so I orderd one today.  It's been a while since I've purchased a new component that made such a significant improvement.  I hope I get the same results.

Corbin this cracked me up! :)  I think we all know that feeling...  :D

I hope you will post your comments about your Transporter when it arrives! I too am on the verge of buying one of these, looks like a fantastic component...

I just built a new powersupply for my RWA modded SB3 and have a bit of the same noise problem. I notice it being linked to data traffic when connected through wireless. Just sitting there it is dead quiet, going through the menus and playing music starts a soft static-like sound.

I connected with ethernet and that seems to have solved the problem.
