Bryston sensitivity switch. 1 volt sounds better!
« on: 29 Oct 2006, 06:10 pm »
Dear Bryston owners,

From the world of PA audio and PA amplifiers I know how important gain matching and gain settings of amplifiers are. Most PA amps sound best with the gain knobs full clockwise. Those gain knobs are mostly located direct in the feedbackloop of the inputstage circuit. Most (discrete or IC) opamp inputstages sounded better with more gain.

For two years I use my 7BSST amps in 2 volt mode. Never think of it actually. Today I tried to switch to 1 volt. The result. A more opens spacious soundstage. A more compact lowend. Tighter bass. A more ease of listening and more drive. Try it out yourself. The downside is, the s/n ratio of the system can be slightly increased because the noise (hiss) of the pre-amplifier get amplified by factor of two as well.

Try it yourself and share your experiences here :)

Best regards,
Bas

I had to check to see what I had it set at. Its at 1, I remember playing around with this when I first got it and I haven't touched it since. 8)

I've always used the 1V setting as recommended in the Bryston manual for single-ended sources.  I doubt if I will ever move this switch because I doubt that I will ever upgrade to balanced interconnects.

Best,

John

Dear,

I forget to mention. I use the 7BSST's balanced. But still prefer the sound of the 1 volt setting.
