Tube rolling in the Candela
« on: 26 Oct 2006, 12:05 am »
:singing: My Candela sounded great with the Odyssey supplied JJ Tesla 12AU7's but from prior experience with my other two previous tube preamplifiers and conversations online with Alex G @ Odyssey i knew that tube rolling can let you tweak the sound of your system to your personal taste. i tried the Mullard CV4003 12AU7 and it has a really nice midrange and is not extremely expensive.the next tube on my list is a tube that some people consider the Holy Grail of the 12AU7 family. the Amperex Holland ECC186/7316 which is a super premium Quality 12AU7 varient that was designed for use in computers. the NOS matched pair that i bought is from a dealer in northern Va that i have done business with before and trust.it is the Amperex ECC186/7316 PQ version made in 1962. the best versions of this tube were said to be made from 1958 to 1963. i am running them in my Candela as i type this and the sound of this tube is so nice from top to bottom that i can understand why this particular tube has such a fine reputation. they were not cheap but to my ears they were worth every penny. the Quality of the Bass that the Lorelei's produce with these vintage Amperex's in my Candela is to die for! and vocal's sound so real that it is almost scary.thanks....WCW III :thumb:

Hello, I'm new to this board and I wanted to put my $.02 in regarding the Candela.  I received it 2 weeks ago and  IMHO this is a FABULOUS preamp.  As soon as I opened the box and saw the silver faceplate, I knew this baby was a quality item.   If you slide open the top lid to look underneath, you can see the high quality parts and the excellent workmanship.  I've seen preamps that cost far more that don't have this kind of build quality.  This is my fourth Odyssey product and it gets better everytime!  I started out with a stereo Stratos plus and HT3 which were great values.  I've since upgraded the stereo Stratos to the mono extreme SE's and these things take the sound to the next level - better bass, bigger soundstage, greater refinement- just better MAN !!!  I remarked to Klaus that the Candela may very well be the new value leader in a product line already known with this distinction.
With the stock JJ Tesla tubes the sound was powerful.  The bass (quality and quantity) and treble extension easily surpassed my Dared SL-2000A by a significant margin.  The imaging was greatly improved and the soundstage was deeper and wider.  But, the biggest difference was the resolution.  I've listened to many of my cd's >50 times before and never heard some of the things I was hearing.  The sound is not overtly tubey in my experience, but it doesn't sound like SS.  I have had other preamps in my system including a Rotel 1068 pre/pro and Monarchy Audio DAC/pre and these SS preamps just don't give the 3D sound a good tube will.  I got the opportunity to hear a Musical Fidelity KW500 integrated thru my speakers and I prefer the sound of my current rig.   I started to tube roll after a week.  First, I tried some GE 6189's - they were smoother and produced a deeper soundstage than the JJ Teslas.  Next, I tried some  RCA cleartop's (1950's vintage).   These had all the advantages of the 6189's over the JJ's but added more detail.  Instruments sound that much more real.  I've ordered some 1950's RCA blackplate 12au7's and also some Baldwin Raytheon 12au7's to see if I can add some warmth, although with the cleartops, the sound is awesome.  I listen to everything from alt rock to classical.  Because of the high resolution of this preamp, poorly recorded stuff is exposed but well recorded stuff is sublime.  My system : digital Sony DVP-s7700> Benchmark DAC-1> Odyssey Candela> Odyssey Stratos Mono Extreme SE's> Quad ESL-988 speakers.  Analog: Rega Planar 3/Incognito> Cambridge Audio 640P > Candela.

I have a question-
How much do tubes go for?  What is the range?  Before I leave this Ex-Soviet sattelite, I may be able to find some worthy tubes.  I am planning on getting tubey in the next few months.
What are some to look for?

Thanks,
Eric

Those are very nice comments.... we are very proud to be able to offer this high level of sound and build quality with the Candela preamp at this price point...I must add that most of your source equipment listed have spent ample time playing through the Candela in the initial stages...I take special interest regarding the Quad ESL-998 speakers, as I have not had the opportunity to hear them driven by a pair of Stratos amplifiers and sourced through the Candela preamp...but based on your comments it appears to be also a good match!

wait till you get about a hundred hours on the Candella! This pretty much the best acoustic jazz preamp I've yet to hear. The detail will only get better and better as it ages, and this is without a doubt the best acoustic upright bass I've ever heard. And it's so lifelike it'll make the hair stand up on the back of your neck! I think it took about 35 hours to quit chasing that last octive in the tenor sax, and I can now say faithfully that "Blue Train" just explodes.

Received my Candela yesterday, it has been burning in for 24 hours with fm.  I am listening right now through an Edge G CD, Mono SE Extremes and the the new outboard xo VMPS RM30Ms.  The preamp replaced a Pass Labs x0.2.  It is too early for a full out review, but when you look at the highend and especially the $10K preamp it replaced, I do not understand how Klaus and Alex do it.  The imaging is phenomenal, precise placement of instruments, tonality is exceptional and the lowest octaves are powerful!  My only quibble is I ordered with remote and there is no remote or manual in the box, I hope they just forgot to include it because it will be difficult to send this baby back.  At this price Klaus should be backed up longer than it takes to get an Aston Martin Vantage!

I can tell each of you this: The Candella will drive tube amps very, very well. Seems to adapt to solid state like it was built for it. I still have the OEM tubes in mine, and can see no reason for a swap.

I agree that the Candela sounds great with the stock JJ Tesla 12AU7's but the design is very receptive to tube rolling and i like having the ability to change the flavor of the Candela using different Tubes.Odyssey is going to offer cryroed Ei elite goldpins that Alex has tried and really likes in the Candela so once they get thier shipment in, i want to be one of the first on the list to have a pair of them shipped to me from Indy.the Amperex Holland ECC186/7316 PQ's that i am running in the Candela are by far the best tubes that i have ever heard Bar none. buying even the most expensive tubes is dirt cheap compared to buying Gear.thanks....WCW III
