Gremlins in my 9bsst when I bi-amp with a 4bsst?
« on: 22 Oct 2006, 07:05 pm »
To get more power to my low sensitivity 85db 4 ohm speakers I recently connected a 9bsst and 4bsst to separate outputs from my Cary tube slp-98 pre-amp.   The 4bsst drives my woofers and the 9bsst my mids and tweeters.   In this configuration and when I  alternate the two amps,  the  the 9bsst just cuts out suddenly with no warning or lights.  I have both amps plugged into a MGE power protector.    After 5-10 minutes  it starts up again only to cut our again after another 5-10minutes.    No problems at all with the 4bsst.  Speakers are Totem Shamans.   Previously I had the 9bsst connected to a processor in my HT without any problems.

Why would a load protector only affect the 9bsst  ...or  is it gremlins before Halloween.    :tempted:

Are the channels that are driving the mid/tweets HOT?

Does the same problem occur w/o the power protector in the mix?

Both amps are running cool.  The 9bsst (driving the mids and tweets)  just shuts off without any change to the lights.  When I plug the 9bsst straight into the wall it plays normally.  I suspect its the surge suppressor cutting power but why only the 9bsst and not the 4bsst?  I am using a MGE UPS Eclipse Protel.  I've now pulled the MGE UPS out of the power path though and both appear to amps function normally.    Maybe its time for a better surge suppressor.

Sounds like it's time for a Torus.

My amps are plugged into the wall.  I have power line conditioners I use in various system from Richard Gary to VanSevers to PS Audio.  The 9BSST has 5 channels and the 4BSST has 2.  So if you look at the power consumption nos. it is not too hard to see what is happening.

I presume you mean the 4bsst is taking most of the load and there isn't enough for the 3 ch.  9bsst so it cuts out?   I would have thought the reverse.  :|
