Rebuilt MLS RM40 review
« on: 21 Oct 2006, 06:27 pm »
Dear Everyone,

Approximately two weeks ago I received my rebuilt RM40s with the following options (or upgrades):

1) Supermax OXO (external crossovers with Bolder silver wire throughout)
2) MLS maple cabinets with 4 sheets of Blackhole 5 / cabinet
3) TRT capacitor upgrades
4) MLS Piano Black CDWGs (although I am currently NOT using..see below)

Improvements:
1) MLS cabinets have less resonance than the old stock cabinets
2) The MLS finish is superior to the stock finish cabinets.  If you are going to order a pair of VMPS speakers THE MLS FINISH IS A MANDATORY UPGRADE!!!
2) Bass sounds cleaner and deeper that the old pair of RM40s
3) Midrange and tweeters are cleaner than before

The only issues I have are with the newly designed MLS CDWG grills.  I wish that Brian would have kept the original design of the CDWG that incorporated a grill cloth.

Issues:
1) The piano black finish shows every fingerprint and minor imprefection.
2) The lack of a grill cloth over the midrange panels and ribbon tweeter provides no protection from the physical surroundings (a big concern if you have children).
3) Looking at a grill cloth is more pleasing than looking at raw speaker drivers (which is a big issues when your speakers are in your living room and you don't want to upset females).

I wonder if Brian could have MLS build me a set of CDWGs with cloth covering the entire grill.

So for now I am using the rebuilt RM40s with a standard speaker grill.  When using the standard grills I have found it necessary to turn down the treble pot to 10 o'clock position, but I have left the midrange pot at the 12 o'clock position.

With or without the CDWGs the speaker sounds absolutely amazing and easily  competes with speaker costing 2-3 times the price.  With the stock finish, one could always noitce that more expensive speakers had a nicer finish..this is no longer the case with the MLS cabinets.

Best,

John

Coolness.  I would also rather have the grill cloth (though I do know that it likely reduces the "transparency" -- pun intended -- of the speaker).

Brian,

Should I send back the standard MLS CDWG for retrofitting of a grill cloth?

Thank you,

John

P.S.  The new speaker is your best work yet...Congrats  8)

Send to Itone Service, 2031 Rumrill Blvd #6 San Pablo CA 94806.  Strap the grills to a slightly larger piece of plywood and wrap with cardboard.

Brian,

It will be a couple of weeks before I send it back.

Thank you,

John

The MLS RM 30's at RMAF are stunning and look tremendous in Ebony Maccassar.

Nice job Mark and Brian.

Has anyone thought about or tried this...

Or is it possible this would alter the properties of the CDWG...

Cut a piece of grill cloth slightly larger than the slot.  Lay the CDWG face down.  Lay the grill cloth down and push into slot with a slot length & width dowel.  Smooth it.  Glue it. Trim it.  Ta Da.  A black slot.

This will hide the not so pretty hardware but not the pretty finish.  In a living room.

I've read somewhere that the origion of the Neo Panels is defective originally but reworked for long life by Brian.  And I imagine they are planar circuit cards in construction.  That drives me nuts.  I work in a CCA factory as a Support Engineer.

I stare :o at defective CCAs all day.

I don't need them staring :o at me at  night.            :o

While this does improve the look of the CDWG, the sound suffers.  With cloth over it the CDWG becomes noticably duller, with some dynamic compression.  Not recommended.

Best is the spray polish available at Honda mc & car dealers, black can, I'll get the exact number if requested.  Works like a charm.  Yes it has carnuba wax.

Oh, I think AH-nowd made it illegal for Honda to sell it in CA, enviornmental reasons.  Good luck.  Nice that AH-nowd still gets to drive his hummer.

Sorry for the OT.

"Pro Honda
Spray Cleaner & Polish
Quickly Cleans, Polishes & Protects"

H/C 3597275, black can, 14oz, pink text on diagonal white stripe

If someone knows of a better all-purpose spray product for this use, please tell us.  It's a steal for only $6 or so...goes on quickly & evenly, wipes off easy

In case anyone didn't know, Big Red nose they s___t

Bill the guy who turned me onto it is Jason ______ (forgot), owner of Moto Meccanica in SRsa, duc/triumph dealer, BOTT bike builder.  If you saw the insanely huge collection of old Euro bikes & parts he has you'd not believe it...I'd love one of his race-prepped Thruxtons (new model)
