Hello there,

Just wondering if there's any cure or ways to minimize the wave that seems to be building up on roll down screens.  I do not want to permanently mount it on a backboard and prefer the convenience and roll up option.  Please advise if there's any remedy to this problem.  It affects the picture quality and kills the illusion of the movie experience.

Thanks in advance,

Kenobi

You may also want to ask that question here:

Supposedly, there's not much you can do other than leave the screen rolled down for a while.  Certain screens (aka "high power") minimize the effect of wrinkles because of the retroreflectivity of the design.  You might not have that type of screen.

Refer to ctviggen and go to AVS.

Many nicer screens have some type anti-wrinkling/curling mechanism for roll-up screens.

Many have said you can steam the wrinkles out.  I haven't tried it, though.

I am thinking that what you really need is a permanently mounted screen, with a roll down covering to protect form dust/UV rays etc. But this is probably a case where it is cheaper to permanently mount the screen, and get a new on in a few years.

I remember the roll up screen we used for 8mm film - it was a real pain.

Hi all,

Thanks for the quick responses/advice, everybody.  Much appreciated!  I will consider the steaming option if there's no other less-risky alternatives.   First, maybe I'll try leaving the screen down for a while to see if it'll go away.

Best regards,

The steam method is supposed to be pretty safe.  I can't recall all the specifics but you can find them at AVS forums.
