iMod for other models?
« on: 13 Oct 2006, 10:50 pm »
Hi Vinnie.
I noticed on the RWA site that you are only doing the iMod for Gen 4 iPods.
Is there any possibility that this may change with the new generation of 80MB units hitting the streets?  Is it primarily the DAC that is the concern?
In either case, I'm interested in getting set up with an iMod - I'd just prefer to have 80MB vs 40 or 60 if I can....

Thanks!
Michael

Hi Michael,

I will not be offering the iMod for the other models.  One of the main reasons is that they are even more of a pain in the @ss to mod than the 4th gen units.  Too time consuming and the price would be a lot more expensive to do.

The 4th gen units (e.g. 60GB iPod Photo) can be purchased Apple factory refurbished from www.smalldog.com for $209.00.  I get these in from customers all the time and they look and function like brand new units.

I also heard that there will be a 120GB hard drive coming out (Toshiba?) that will be the same size and connector as the 60GB used in the iPod Photo.  When it comes out, I will see if it can be installed and work with this unit.

Seems to be a lot of recent iMod activity on headfi:

Thanks for the link Vinnie.
I had done some searching online with limited success.  :?

Please let us know how the HD swap works, whenever it comes out, and whenever you can shoehorn the time in your schedule.   :rotflmao:

Swapping the HD in those 4G iPods is actually very simple. Unless you were getting an iMod at the same time, there is no reason you couldn't do it yourself with very little risk. Though, I don't know what the software issues of such a swap would be.
