My favorite open baffle uses the Fostex F200a driver. It is a quick smooth and precise driver, cleaner than the Visaton B200. This Fostex is rather bright for my taste, but this brightness is soothed by use of a foam grill (also tried cloth); the grill also helps integrate the treble which has a slight disconnect (heard near field) due to being hot wired at the dust cap.

Seehttp://www.audio-resolution.com/zhorn/ob.html for more.

I wish I needed some drivers because I've been eyeballing the F200a for a while.  Problem is
used pairs don't crop up.  I'm still hoping to tweak its cousin, the FE206E, into submission.
For now the F200 has to stay on my "try someday" list.

JohninCR,

Regarding FE 206E, Bert Doppenberg uses the following notch filter for his Singular design:

'No it is not on the Singular page, I'll have to add it. Thanks for the reminder!

The EQ is made of:

1.2mH
22ohm
470nF (nano)

All parts connected in parallel and this filter should be connected in series with the driver.'

May do the job. Playing around with one of those famous BSC-circuits I would recommend 1 mH + 13 ohm to see what effect that might have.

Erling,

I can't find any bipolar caps down here.  That's the reason I've become such a minimalist, necessity.
With the active system I'm about to implement, I'll be able to do anything I want with response using
the totally flexible XO's and variable Q EQ, not to mention phase correction and time alignment, all
totally transparent, unlike things such as the Behringer units.  I'm going straight from the 19th century
to the 21st.  :green:

Regarding the 206E, I still believe there's a way to fix it's response with physical tweaking.  A guy at
the fullrangedriver forum claims to have done it, and I want to try some of the things he did.  My goal
is to make it sound like my 108Esigmas, but with the extra efficiency and bass capacity.  Then I just have
to build an OB manifold that can go up to 200hz and keep up with the real 96db efficiency that the 206
delivers.

John,

Fair enough, Good Luck !
My simulations for that BSC-circuit show that you still will have the 96 dB effeciency. :D

GHM,

I'd be interested in your impressions if you get the chance to compare these OBs with the BB FTA-2000 TLs.

Hi JLM..yup..I'm looking at the different options Tom offers...there are many!! :o
I was thinking of the OBs as a two speaker in one deal for my F200a drivers. So when the mood strikes I can swap out the drivers from the TL to the OB without problems. Maybe ..just maybe..I can swing a pair of his OBs in the coming months. :D They sure look nice! 8) I thought about getting a sub to run off the second outputs of my preamp..this way I wouldn't miss too much in the bass department.
