Off to Oregon this coming weekend.
« on: 9 Oct 2006, 03:58 pm »
My daughter is now a senior in high school. She has narrowed down her list of colleges she wishes to attend. The highest on her list is the University of Oregon. She is interested in journalism

We are going to fly into Portland on Friday, so she and I can tour the campus.

We will be spending Friday night in Portland and drive down to Eugene early Saturday morning.

As the Ducks are playing UCLA on Saturday, there is no place in Eugene to stay. We will drive up north a bit to spend the night. We are planning to drive along the coast to Portland on Sunday and fly out Sunday night.

This will be a nice little break right before the insanity of RMAF.

If any members of AC are in Portland and want to get together for a beverage or two, I will be staying downtown Friday night. I remember the Pilsner Room as being a very nice place to have a couple of brews and some conversation. Drop me a message and maybe we can meet up.

Wayne:
Stay overnight in Corvallis. Short drive North of Eugene. Have dinner at the Gables rest. 1121 NW 9th st.
Steak and seafood place. It's been there forever and is a local hang out. Congrats to your daughter for choosing U.of O. Very good school and a very nice place to live. Beautiful countryside.

                                  Cheers

Just saw this and I will say I'm going over the thought of coming down there for a drink or two.

Not sure where I'm working Friday, exactly when I'll get off, and how wore out I'll be. Not to mention I'm not sure about how long it'd take to get to Portland on a Friday evening.

Wayne, I think I still have your cell #, unless it's changed from the time that you were up here last year.

I am having dinner tomorrow night with a friend of mine that could answer the time to Portland on a friday night question for me. And if the time it should take to get down there isn't too insane I might just have to come down there.

So, where's the Pilsner Room?

Brian,

The Pilsner Room is next to the McCormick & Schmick's in Riverside Marina in downtown Portland

info here

The brewery is operated by Full Sail

Map here

If you can make it, that would be great. Cell number is the same.

I was in Eugene last summer for a vacation w/ my ex.  A BEAUTIFUL area.  2 hours from the coast, 2 hours from mountains, etc.  She had also attended U of O. . .she drove me by the house where part of Animal House was filmed!   :P

Your daughter will definitely dig OR. . .if I had the opportunity, I'd move there in a heartbeat!

So Wayne, if I can actually make it down there what would be a time that'd be too late to show up?

And I checked my old emails and am not seeing your cell # in any of them. Could you send that to me?

Let me know what you two have for plans. If you want we could get together at my house too. I'm sure at least I could make it downtown for dinner. I know the restaurant scene here well. Let me know. You guys can get my numbers on the VMPS website under dealers and Audioware as the company name.

So, I was quoted as it being in the neighborhood of 3 1/2-4 hours to get down there on a Friday night. Which means if I head there as soon as I get off work I could possibly be there around 7:30-8:00. Kinda late for doing any type of dinner as Warner suggested.

But that should be fine for having a beer or two at the Pilsner Room as Wayne would like to do.

So, I shall give it a shot and hopefully see at least the two of you for a beer or two...

Unless you're north of Seattle it doesn't take over 3 hours. Where are you coming from?

I really don't know yet where I'll be coming from. Earlier today I was thinking it would be West Seattle. Then it was going to be the U-District. Now I don't know. Still might be either West Seattle, or the U-District. Could also possibly be Renton. Or maybe something else entirely.

It'd be nice if it was Renton as it's a lot closer to Portland, and I know I'd be getting off at least 1/2 hour sooner if I was there.

Anyway, the 3 1/2-4 hour quote was taking traffic into consideration. I know I've gotten down there in about 2 1/2 hours before. But that was no traffic whatsoever. And it was a good 5+ years ago.

5 South sucks all through Seattle at that time of day. Is also no fun from Fife down past Tacoma. It can also be a little lame around Olympia.

But, I've got both your cell #s now (would be nice if I had a cell myself). And am printing up all the info I need...

My daughter and I made it back to Colorado, finally.

The plane we were scheduled to fly out of Portland on, hit a bird on it's way into Denver on the first leg. They delayed the flight into Portland for 2 hours to inspect the plane for any damage. By the time the plane finally arrived and got baggage unloaded and loaded up, we didn't get out of Oregon till very late. Finally pulled into our driveway at 2:30 AM.

We did have a good time. It was very nice meeting Warner. It was also great that Bubba took the time to battle traffic down to Portland from Seattle. Had a few beverages and a lot of talk.

The campus of University of Oregon is beautiful. My daughter was very impressed. The town of Eugene is quite something. I thought the People's Republic of Boulder was on the liberal side. Eugene makes Boulder seem to be somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan
