Help using a USB DAC and a laptop
« on: 9 Oct 2006, 03:01 am »
I have a ton of FLAC files on my laptop and have an external creative sound card running off usb. All of which I'm running the coax out to my receiver (don't tell me I know a HT reciever , it is what I have for now) and will be getting a NAD 320BEE. My question is are they any USB DAC's under $200 and how can I use USB to feed the DAC?

Thanks
RH

On ebay you will find a seller called Mhdt Labs. There is a DAC available from them called the USB Plus Constantine. Very, very highly recommended.

P.S. At the time of this writing, Mhdt Labs doesn't have any listings on ebay, but this is unusual for them. Keep checking, they are hand-made and posted as they become available. Here's a link to a completed listing for one of these gems.

I believe they are having a long weekend holiday in Taiwan. That probably explains why they don't have any items on eBay at the moment.

Yes, do a search on AC or AA for comments on the Firestone Fubar DAC. Under $200.

You simply connect a USB cable from your computer to the USB input on the DAC and you are all set.

Have fun.

Looks like I will get that, unless there are any other options. Are there any simple USB dac kits that will cost under $200 to build (chassis included)?

Thanks

Scott Nixon sells a usb dac kit for about $120-$140, depending on options...   http://www.scott-nixon.com/dac.htm

The builder of the dac that NewBuyer mentioned, Mhdt Labs, builds several std. dacs as well and they were very favorably reviewed by AC member ScottF over on EnjoyTheMusic recently...  http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0406/mhdt_laboratory_dac.htm
