You should leave the dark side and join us over here. AC is well moderated which is more than I can say for AA.

I've hardly ever had a problem with the moderation at AA....  I only post there because it's easier for me to see the subjects and threads at a glance, and easier to find stuff quickly.  I just prefer that style of message board.

The one thing I'll give AC credit for, however, is I don't ever recall this site ever being down.....

Jousting? Nah, me and Neutron don't joust with each other. And Curl? That ain't jousting. That's just me bappin' 'im upside the head.  :green:

I do too, but what I don't like about it is that threads just scroll off into the archives. What I like about boards like this is that threads never have to die. When a topic is posted to, it's brought back up to the top. What I don't like about boards like this it's flat, with no subthreading. New posts are just tacked on at the end. That's about as primitive as it gets. That's how it was on the old The Audiophile Network dialup BBS back in the early 80s when it was running on an old Apple IIe.

I think another reason why I don't post much here is the topics seem to be more "brand" oriented, where Audio Asylum is more "component types", "parameters", and "system-building" oriented....  I personally think discussion on "brand-based" forums creates exaggeratingly-positive consensus for the products discussed.  Mainly because people are often afraid to be critical in such an environment.....  Especially if the actual designer posts often on his brand's board, and in a friendly, congenial manner.

Conversely, there seems to be no real equivalent to "SET Asylum" or "Propeller Head" here....  And unless I'm missing something, I don't see much discussion of general sonic characteristics, system-optimization, technical concerns, or fixing problems.

It's just that I visit the site, peruse the forums, and then get bored.  My attention span here is a lot shorter here than on Audio Asylum.

Somebody else here who was also on that grandaddy?

Audiophile BBS Network???

Boy, we have some folks *really* showing their age here... (I'd say "Dag-nab-it!", but I want to maintain some dignity - ahem).

I post more on AA because it is a lot easier to use.

I've been cloaked here for some time and then decided to jump aboard lately.

I agree that sub-threading is nice on AA and agree generally with Todd... now if they can get the new additions to threads to bubble to the top as mentioned, that would be the best of both worlds.

I'm sure I'm not the only one praying that AA gets its server up and running soon.

I miss the Asylum, but at the same time, I am visiting some good sites that I don't see on a regular basis. For me, it is  about habit and loyalty. I came over to the new Asylum from AR. It was a small community at first and there were some really knowledgeable engineer types that had a great amount of info to share. I was in DIY Heaven. Over the years there seems to have been a brain drain away from it.
Thanks to the guys who run the Circles. Nice site and I just spent more money after reading a thread on the Promitheus passive.

Oh yeah, I remember. I was TAN'S "Technical Director" and took care of all the BBS stuff after the switch to a PC based system. I was the one who finally talked Guy Hickey into giving up the Apple and getting a PC and some REAL BBS software. After several years dragging him kicking and screaming, he finaly relented and sent a PC up to me and I loaded up the software and got the BBS set up and sent it down to him. Then I took care of things remotely. It was set up to go offline around midnight so it could do its internal maintenance (packing the message databases, etc.).

It's hard to believe today, but TAN was actually making some halfway decent money through subscription fees. I was recieving a small cut and was getting $200-$300 of pocket money from it each month. It was the Audio Asylum of its day. And then along came the Internet. :)

I'd left TAN by then, and Guy eventually tried to bring TAN to the Internet. And it might well have been successful but Guy insisted on sticking to the subscription model. Even before the Internet I'd tried to get Guy to change the model and instead of user subscriptions, sell advertising, manufacturer forums, and the online "eStore" that Guy had been wanting to develop for years.

Ah well. Lessons are sometimes only learned the hard way.

Those were some great times though.

Looks that was again this morning.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to browse here and at Audiogon all day today. At least I haven't been driven back to Audioreview, or Rec.HighEnd.Audio (showing my age here). :duh:

Enjoy,
Bob
