Infrant Ready NAS Squeezeboxes Bundle
« on: 4 Oct 2006, 12:01 am »
I have been considering the purchase of a Squeezebox for some time.  I finally installed a wireless router and have been reading up on external hard drives for digital storage.  Along comes this package deal from Slimdevices.  I have homes for two Squeezeboxes and the Infrant NAS looks to be a solid choice for storage - maybe overkill.  Any thoughts out there on this offer?

If you need two Squeeze Boxes and 1TB of storage is enough for you, it is a good deal and turnkey solution.

You can more storage at a lower price on ebay, but you will need to configure the Slim Server software yourself (not sure if that is an issue for you) and still need to buy the SB's.

You maybe able to get an older version of 1 TB ReadyNas for a little less but your savings will be less then $50.  The combo really works very well. You can partition the unit to use some of the capacity to back up everything on you PC if you don't need all the space for music.  BTW, you will only have 750 GB running RAID5.  And, of course, the main attraction for me is that I can keep my PC off while I access the music 2 floors away.   :thumb:

Does anyone know if something like the Infrant is available in a "D-I-Y" style, without the drives? I already have three 300 GB drives (all the same), so if there was a way to buy a diskless version of this kind of thing, and then install the drives and configure, it would seem to be more cost efficient.

You can buy just the box for $600 or so new from newegg.com - might be able to find it cheaper on ebay.

I built a server using Unraid. I've had no issues and it works as advertised.

Hi
That unraid looks pretty cool, I would like to have a music server without spending $1k to do it.
Only thing I noticed was that the HW compatibility looked pretty limited.
Was that an issue in putting a machine together?

Also, sorry to thead jack.

I built a server using recommended components and had no issues. I originally planned on using an old Dell machine as my server, but the motherboard wouldn't fit in the server case. My server can hold 16 hard drives! I use it as a whole house music/photo/video server, and as back up for everything. It fit my needs at a fair price IMHO and I recommend it. It probably is more than most people need though.
