In my case it was adding a pre-amp.  I had been using my CDP direct to my amp and the addition of a pre-amp opened things up a lot. Guess I needed the added gain for my speakers to "bloom"

Adding a REAL sub that will go deep but is fast and musical enough to keep up and blend nicely with the mains.  Took the load off my Dynaudio's from 50Hz down and really opened things up.  92db@1W/1m and 114db@16Hz (-3db point)

If you don't think a 15 can be nimble and musical, you should listen to this one.  No magnet, no voice coil, just a high speed oscillating motor tied to strapping on the back side of the active drivers.  Passives are as stiff as you can get - 7/8" 14 ply Baltic Birch.

For me it was removing my preamp. I had a new RWA Sig 30 amp that I burned in a bit then tried with and without a preamp, preferring it with the preamp. But after a lot more hours I removed the preamp again and was surprised by how much better the Sig 30 sounded driven direct from the source. I learned that with a broken-in Sig 30 the preamp was taking away more than it added. Particularly with acoustic guitar it's great to hear some old albums again.

Moving to a new house. My new listening space is vastly different from my previous home and is much smaller and also much deader as I was able to address the acoustics, which I couldn't really do in the old house.

The system is much more intimate and is quite different to listen to. I thought I had it pretty well set up but then I moved the speakers forward 4 inches the other night on a hunch. Often moving them farther from the wall reduces the bass. In this case I ended up with a bit more punch and am very happy with the sound at present.

I'd have to say bi-amping...certainly ear-opening...made me sit down and listen instead of doing other stuff while listenning. Of course it begged to be turned up, since everything was so much cleaner.

Hrmm... I replaced some caps in my tube amps ... a pair of Sonicaps (thanks Danny ) for a phase compensation network, and some new Sylvania 6SN7GTB driver tubes.  Wow, things are sounding much better now.  I finally have achieved the rare and coveted "dry" tube sound... no more artificial gloss, and a lot more speed.

changing my entire SS set to an All-tube setup was a total revelation.
i have always shied-away from valves because of fear that the things are dangerous and they are more expensive to maintain.  however, after 10 years with my last SS setup, and having heard a lot of valves in HongKong in my July travel... i thought mine was "dead" and flat.

i sold my set upon coming back and bought a totally new setup, all-tube, 845/300B SET-based system.

i also went totally analogue (my first love, really) and even sold my tube CDP (Cayin 17a).

even in my SS-days, I've always been a believer of separates and bi-amping (active) is always tops to me; this will be my next route after i am finally broken-in with my present system.

Welcome egay.

And welcome all you bi-amp fans.  Single driver users have known the advantages of active driver/amp setups from the beginning.   

IMO the break-in or re-break-in mitigates greatly the epiphany that a new component can bring.  (That's one advantage of room changes.)  For me it starts with curiosity and during break-in (hopefully) moves to listening to more and more of my collection.

Typing of which, moving to a new house with a room designed for listening wasn't the audible revelation I thought it would be (both rooms were about the same size, don't know if that was a factor).  But the man cave aspect was huge.

My very last change was adding another subwoofer. (see my post under ACI regarding stereo Maestros and....) Now I have stereo and my whole audio system took a major leap forward towards hi-fi UTOPIA

I also added a new CD/DVD player earlier 2006. It has been a very fun year for me. I have had to listen to everything at least a couple times. That is my reason for buying new equipment, so I can keep listening and watching everthing over and over again and keep hearing what I have never heard. 
 
Maybe it is just that my hearing is changing (we won't say which way) but I just have to keep improving my stuff to hear the same stuff as good as I heard 20 years ago!

Got a super deal on a Resolution Audio CD-50 at ebay. Ad stated less than good cosmetics so it went cheap. A few minutes cleaning off some paint the seller thought were scratches on the faceplate and it looks darn good. This thing sounds so much better than any cdp I've owned. If I'm even halfway ;istening I'll hear something new on most discs.
