New Maggies, power amp question
« on: 2 Oct 2006, 06:51 pm »
I recently bought a new pair of Magnepan 1.6s from Audio Advice in Raleigh, NC. When I asked about upgrading from my current Rotel amp, they unhesitatingly said "Bryston".

I have read and read and read on ye olde internets, and I believe I have come to the conclusion that (as always) the boys at Audio Advice know their business. So my question is, given my "across the front" line-up of Magnepan 1.6s and a Magnepan MGCC-1 center, do I want to go with the 9B SST (I have a pair of Mirage 190i in the rear) or do I want to get really serious up front and go with 6B SST and just use the old Rotel to drive the rears?

Your opinions are both desired and welcome.

Hi George,

I have owned every Maggie there is to own and my advice is go BIG on the fronts.
A 6B (LCR) and the Rotel (LR RR) or a 4B (left and right) and a 3-channel 9B for the Center and Surrounds.

George,

I recently purchased a Bryston 4B SST for a two-channel audio system.  My speakers are VMPS RM40s.  They are relatively efficient at 90dB/1W/1m, but they are a true 4 ohm speaker (min = 3.5 and max = 4.5).  IMO I would go with the 4B SST for the main speakers and a 3 channel 9B SST for the center and rear.  With this setup if you ever decide to go to a 7 channel system you can add two additional channels to the 9B.

Best,

John
