Considering AKSA 55
« on: 29 Sep 2006, 10:31 pm »
Hello!

I've been considering a DIY poweramp/preamp for a while now and it seems that my budget would allow at least the poweramp soonish. After a bit of research, I'm leaning very stongly to the direction of 55 with nirvana+ mods built as 2 monoblocs, but I would like to know how it might fit into my existing system and music I listen.

System at the moment is:
Modded heavy plinth Lenco L75
Creek OBH-8 SE phonostage
DIY Pearl phonostage in progress
NAD C352 integrated
Totem Dreamcatcher speakers
+ the usual CD player, tuner, DVD etc. System is and stays stereo, and TT is the main music source.

Music I listen to is very varied including classical, jazz, rock from 50's onward, both in stereo and mono. I very rarely go over 9 o'clock with the volume pot nowadays, have to consider neighbours and such ;)

Plan is to keep the NAD for a while as preamp as I need the 7 inputs and 2 line level outputs and move forward to DIY preamp when suitable project is found and budget permits. But the bottom line is, would a 55 fit into my system and music preferences? (Shame that about nobody in here, Finland FWIW, seem to know AKSA so I could do a listening test beforehand, but now and then one has to fly by seat of pants and recommendations :) )

Hi Reko,

Welcome to our forum - Finland, a country of serene lakes and beautiful forests, with strong IT infrastructure and marvellous music.  Just yesterday I ripped my Kullervo by Sibelius CD to FLAC!!  Sibelius is one of my most favoured composers, and I have a treasured Carla Bley CD played by the Espoo Big Band, which I've seen live in concert here in Melbourne - just sensational!

Yes, the AKSA would suit your system, but I would strongly suggest the N+ to complement your other components.

Thank you for your willingness to take a 'seat of the pants' risk!  Yes, life is so often like that!

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks for the welcome and reply Hugh!

Sibelius happens to be one of my faves from the classical front as well - So much that we used Karelia suite Intermezzo as our wedding march, arranged for the organ bit like the old The Nice version.

N+ is definitely fitting into my budget, and considering the listening impressions from other people in the net, I think I rather like only one burn-in period rather than two :) If I have gotten it right, in addition of the cases I need to source two 240V->36V transformers locally with single secondary - what kind of output VA rating should I look for?

Getting and replinting my Lenco based on writings in the Net was one great leap of faith and I hope that the AKSA will be another resulting in as great satisfaction in listening music.

That's what I did. That's a fantastic amp to say the least.

I have to say, one night I was listening to this song called "My beloved wife"  tears runing down my face and in walked my wife :o , so embarrassing.

Anyway, fantastic amp great project, you won't regret it.

Well, I bit the bullet and sent my order (And I did find the recommended transformer ratings from the website as well) :)
