The verdict is out! Well, at least to my own ears 8)

Wayne's SB2 analog mod with the Ultimate Power supply clearly beats the stock Transporter analog out. I A/B them at the show, the transporter analog out sounded a little "blurry" at the edge, Wayne's SB2 analog out sounded sharper, more transparent.

A guy who sat down with me at the same time also told me that he heard the same thing.

Very slowly

The last changes I made to the Transporter were all very positive but it is still not close to the sound of a modded SB2 or 3 with Sonicap Platinum run off the Ultimate PS MKII.

I need to do more work on the power supplies.

I have also received lots of orders for mods since RMAF, so I am getting a bit behind.

If the folks who sent me their Transporters are getting a bit impatient, let me know and I will send them back asap. Complete mods for the Transporter may not be ready before the end of the year.

Wayne,

What's your current turnaround for modding SB 3's?

Cheers

Depending on when the unit arrives and what sort of mod is requested, between 2-3 weeks.

This is subject to change and I just may be able to turn some units out a bit quicker.

A full mod with Byee Purifiers takes longer than a SB3 digital only mod. If the order also contains an Ultimate PS MKII, that slows production down a bit more.

I'm in no rush to get my Transporter just disappointed that at this stage it still can't match the SB2, I was hoping for better news. :(

I have an unmodded Transporter and thought I should comment. My system sounds better than ever before. I am using the Transporter directly into my McCormack DNA-500 via Outlaw RCA interconnects. The amp is connected to my Salk Veracity HT3's.

I had been using a Bolder digital only modded SB3 with the Basic rev 1 PS with film caps. The modded SB3 went to my Parasound prepro for DAC/preamp function and then to the amp and speakers. It's obviously not an apples to apples comparison but the Transporter is worlds better.  The detail is there but there's improved imaging and instrument separation. The bass through the treble is more realistic, balanced, and musical. My Salk HT3's sound the very best that I've heard them and they are wonderful speakers.

Now, I also think my present set up is superior to my original modded SB3 rig and this is more of a fair comparison. I originally had the Squeezebox digital out going directly to an Aberdeen modded Tact which served as DAC and preamp with much lauded room correction. I used the same amp and speakers and I was never completely satisfied. The sound was better than the Parasound set up but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I do the Transporter. The Transporter just sounds great. And I have to admit, the display is really cool. :thumb:

I have no doubt the Transporter sounds better than a digital modded only SB3 with a Basic Rev 1 PS.

There is such a difference between the Basic Rev 1 and the Ultimate MK II PS that I stopped making all versions of the Basic.

I believe you are fairly good friends with Zybar. I am currently working on a "new" SB2 for him with every analog mod I know. When he gets it, you two should get together and compare.

BTW, mgalusha borrowed a stock Transporter for a few days. His thoughts are very similar to mine regarding the Transporter on analog out vs a modded SB2 on analog fed by an Ultimate PS MKII.

I do agree the dual display and front mounted controls are really handy.

Wayne,

I definitely plan on hooking up with George in the near future. He decisively favors your modded SB2 to the Transporter and I trust his ears. In fact, I bought my speakers and amp based on his recommendations. :)

I just wanted people to recognize how good the stock Transporter was. I think it's a bargain compared to most high end Preamp/DAC/Transports and it's an amazing invention. Your modded unit may be better yet. I hope to see soon.

I Am sure once Wayne figures his mod package for the transporter,
and lays his magic on the analog section,
The transporter will the top gun.
