Please chime in if you have done such thing.  I now know how to record then transfer 24/48 WAV to PC/HD, but I'm still not sure how to do to several hi-res discs I have around.

Well, you will need some special software, like DVDARipper (decryption of CPPM-protected DVD-Audio content) or PPCMRipper (to capture MLP encoded stream), both were available as free download some time ago, but not anymore, just google both and read. You'd also need InterVideo WinDVD 5/6 Player version 5.3.5.37-like or 6.0.6.56-like.
And, then if you need to author them back to dvd-a format, you'll need something like discWelder Chrome Edition ($2999 retail), other editions only support up to48kHz for 6-ch. and up to 192kHz for 2-ch. After that you'll need to squeeze all that massive content on a dvd media and for this you'll need a SurCode MLP Encoder ($2500 retail).

Cheaper alternatives.  I've used both.

If you insist on making a DVD-A you could use Solo's DVD-A making software.  It's not too expensive and has a trial period.   It's good for up to 24 bit 192 kHz files in stereo or 24 bit 96 kHz in 5.1.   However you do have to play it back as a DVD-A.   So those without a player are SOL.

Another way so you don't have to use a DVD-A player since your files aren't that big is to use Audio DVD creator.   This will stream the PCM to your reciver and should play on any DVD player.   It works  great! I've done several 24 bit 96 kHz files with it.

I'll strongly second the recommendation for Audio DVD Creator.  Software costs about $30 and burns (actually creates standard DVD files ready to burn) at up to 24 bit/96 kHz in PCM on a regular DVD.  No DVD-A player or special burning software required.  Great program and relatively easy to use.
