Black dressplates with RM40 FST upgrade?
« on: 19 Jun 2003, 06:03 pm »
I just recieved my RM40 FST upgrade "kit" today and since the factory is closed.......Anybody receive the black dressplates with the FST upgrade?

In step #4 of installing the FST tweeters:

"Install the FST in the cutout and secure with screws, glue, or silicon sealant. Apply the black dressplates top and bottom to cover the old tweeter cutouts. Use masks to cover the FST, leaving a slot opening in the center the same width as the opening of the short waveguide."

I have the masks to cover the FST, but no dressplates.
Are we supposed to make our own?  If so, what have people used?
If someone has already done the upgrade on the RM40/TRT, any cautions, tips, or helpful hints would be much appreciated! :D

I've been waiting on dress plated for a looong time.  Got the FST tweeters and crossover components, but they do no good without the dressplates. . .

I wonder if I can get the instructions before, to see if I can do it, the response from someone was: 1 sale the speakers and buy another with the FST. 2. send to the factory($2,000.00 aprox. option).

Hi Juan- PM me with your e-mail and I can send you the instructions.  There is soldering involved, but it doesn't seem to hard.  The "dressplates" issue could become a major headache.  I'm waiting for an answer on this, before I plug the jigsaw in.

Sal, the RM 40 cabinet guy, is 4 weeks late delivering the dressplates.  It has to be done right or it looks bad.  Sal should arrived 6/23, will inform.

In the meantime cover the cutouts with anything convenient for an airtight seal.

What kind of solder?

Thanks Brian.  Also, what kind of solder should we use for all the connections?  Wondersolder?  WBT Silver solder?  Kester?  Please advise.
Expense of solder not a concern.

I like 63/37 Kester, but Wondersolder or other high quality solder also works well.

Believe it or not, I have still not received my dressplates  I refuse to cut holes in a $5000 pair of speakers, install a $400 pair of tweeters and have holes staring me in the face.

If anyone did the upgrade and knows how to make a set of black dressplates I will pay for your time and material if you are willing to sell a pair.  Even a photo of the upgrade with the dresplates would be a huge help.  Thanks!

I've seen the dressplate. It is literrally a wooden board that fits flush with the circumfrence of the two spirrals, the same size as the mid panel painted black with hole cut out in the center. You can easily have this made for you at a lumberyard. If you don't want to wait.
You might also want to choosea material with a smooth finish.

Sal never made any dressplates.  We had to refund everybody.  Ditto with the extra wide bases.  Sorry things didn't go as we both planned, but there's little you can do about thoroughly dishonest suppliers.

Never trust anyone named Sal, particularly if they make frequent references to their "cousin" Vito.
