Golf, Anyone?
« on: 20 Sep 2006, 08:14 pm »
Would you gentlemen like to join me for a golf outing on October 14th?  If you know how to keep score and understand the rules of golf, you may be too good for this trip.   :duh:

The goal will be to simply have fun.  Scores are irrelevant.

Can anyone suggest a centrally located course that we can play for relatively cheap?

No golf shoes unless you got them for free or less than $30.  In fact, if you are wearing more than $30 worth of golf accessories, you might not have much competition at this outing.

Will someone be suppling the balls? Ifin I'm able to participate I will be needin a couple dozen depending on timber and water hazards. A bucket of range balls will probably do it.

Sounds like a great idea, Mike. I can take the afternoon off but not all day on the 18th so maybe 9 holes would work better. Tower tee is a nice par 3 course in Affton with a driving range. (The back 9 is more challenging with longer holes). Forest Park has an 18 hole course and the Triple A 18 hole course.  They're both more challenging and hilly.

On the east side there is the American Legion course in Edwardsville and Tee-up in Fairmount which has a driving range too. I can keep score but I stop counting after 8.

Count me in  :thumb:

I haven't played it yet but I hear the Forest Park course turned out really nice since they rebuilt it. That and its fairly cheap. I'm not overly familiar with the Illinois courses but I know for sure Spencer T. Olin in Alton is a nice course, as is Anbriar down in Columbia (they might be a little pricey though). I hear Gateway is nice too, its somewhere near Bellville. If you want, I could make a phone call tomorrow and ask a few of the guys I know for some other courses on the East side.

Sounds like we are a bunch of hackers so we might want to pick a course that is 'wide open' so we don't loose too many balls. When it comes to golf gear, I've got all the right tools, I just can't figue out how to use them (right). I've got one of my buds whose a scratch golfer giving me lessons. Its helped quite a bit. I've shaved about 15 stokes off my game but I'm still shooting over 100 on 18 so I've got a long way to go. My problem is I don't play enough to get better and thats what it takes.

I love the idea of GAS Golf.

Saturday the 14th is the date that would work for me.  All other Saturdays are full with work for me until mid Novermber.  I'd really like to check out Forest Park.  However, I've heard great things about the course in Edwardsville for non-champs.  Anbriar is a golf coach friend of mine's favorite course.  He said it is gorgeous.  The cost is medium to high according to him.

In other words, I'm glad you fellas are interested.  Hopefully the Saturday date will make things easier for all of us.

It'd be great if you get a chance to ask around about a destination for us.  It's funny that you said you have all of the tools.  I can't imagine you having all of the latest in gear: golf or otherwise.   :icon_lol:  With any luck, this little outing won't cost us all any more than maybe one or two more "tweeks" to our golf "system."  Also, if you'd like to share some of your knowledge with us, we'd be more than happy to listen.

Hi folks,

You might check out this site for prices and locations.

http://www.lastminutegolfer.com/stlouis/

Someone may need to call to find out the exact rates on the various locations.  Some courses are transitioning to their "winter rates" so some of the prices may not be quite accurate.  Also senior discount rates apply generally to those over the age of fifty, if you want to admit to that.  I generally work days on Saturdays, otherwise I would throw my name in the hat also.

Hope this helps.

Have fun and hit 'em straight.

Ron

ps If you see any Top-Flite balls with three red dots, those are mine from a previous outing.

I'll ask the guys tomorrow but when it comes to me and my knowledge of golf, I know two things.

1. I suck
and
2. I suck

OK,

Here’s what the guys had to say about the courses (of which there are many).  I talked to them about a dozen or better different courses mainly on the east side. I told them we are all a bunch of hackers so we need a relatively wide open course with big greens.

These are the courses mentioned in conversation;

Far Oaks – subdivision golf - http://www.faroaksgolfclub.com/index.html
Grand Marais
Stonebridge - http://www.golfatstonebridge.com/
Stonewolf – subdivision golf - http://www.stonewolfgolf.com/home.htm
Gateway National - http://www.gatewaynational.com/page/292-12746.htm
Spencer T Olin
Fox Run – narrow, challenging
Belk Park
Tamarak
Emerald Greens (Pipefitters course in Spanish Lake)
Forest Park - http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/parks/forestpark/golf.html
The Orchards
Annbriar - http://www.annbriar.com/index.html

Their recommendations kept coming back to three courses. Gateway, Forest Park and Annbriar. Gateway is supposed to be the most wide open of the three. Forest Park came with high regards for being open yet fairly challenging. And finally Annbriar. Annbriar (which I’ve played a few times) is a top notch public course. At times it’s wide open, other times you are better off taking a drop and forgetting about the missing ball. They have a few spectacular holes. Some of the coolest you’ll see on any course anywhere. Annbriar is going to run about $10 bucks more than the other courses but if you want to experience a killer course, this would be the choice.

So what do you guys think?

Since I haven't played in 2 years, I don't think I need a killer course right now.  :o Gateway sounds like my kind of course--wide and open. Of course, if they cut all the trees down, that would be nice too. aa We need at least a foursome. Any other gasser golfers up for the day? Otherwise, I have some fellow hackers who might want to play.

I'd bet Jamie Crane would play. Mike, don't you have his number somewhere? I think MerRev plays too doesn't he?

Hey scott
Yep I'll play if it is in the morning, I have to work that afternoon at three. If we can get done by 2pm or so I am good. Otherwise I will be at the next one!

Spencer T is pretty nice from what I understand. Arnold Palmer design but managed now by anothe company.
The American Legion Course in Edwardsville is suppose to be ok too, never played there.

I only played once this year, in may for a fundraiser so I suck at this point too.

Keep me posted!

Jamie

PS
any idea when the Xmas party will be this year? I am just wondering as some of us have to get off of work!

I'll host the Christmas gathering again this year. Tell you what, I'll make a separate post so we don't intermingle topics. In that post I'll give let everybody decide on a couple of different dates.

Hey Guys,

I usually would love to get to play golf any time I get the chance.  I am arround a 14 handicap, but I have to work on Saturdays.  If you schedule one for a Sunday, I would definetly make it.  FOUR.

Welp, Jamie needs to be done by 2:00 so...  How 'bout we meet at Gateway at 9:00 or 10:00 AM?

Either time is fine with me.

Considering that 18 takes about 5 hours (maybe longer on a Saturday), I'd say the earlier the better. That should give Jamie plenty of time to get to work.

Mike, are you going to call and set the Tee Time?

Hey Steve, want me to pick you up on my way by?

Sounds like a plan Scott. To save time, we could play a scramble too. (That's assuming any of us can drive)
