I'd go for the SVS over a Velo/REL or Paradigm anyday.

I doubt if you can go wrong with an SVS sub.  This sub will be excellent for music with a sealed design.  The response is excellent (flat from 22 to 150 Hz with 87 dB output).  For Home Theater applications you will probably want a ported sub for greater ouput of 100 dB+.

I've used a PB10ISD sub for HT and have been very happy for the last year.  I doubt if I would ever upgrade.  Any significant upgrade would require a larger room and significantly more $$$.

Best,

John

P.S.  The build quality of the SVS subs is amazing.

I used to own REL subs (Strata III).  IMO they are WAY over priced!!  Seriously the Strata III sub retailed for $1200 and used a standard 10" woofer as a driver that you could purhcase for less than $100.  Not exactly a great bargain.  In comparison, my SVS sub for $400 uses a better driver!!  IMO SVS and ACI builds subs that are vastly superior to REL subs.

Best,

John

The SUB is Ordered  SVS SB12 Plus :thumb:   :thumb:
I never thought the PDR-8 sounded bad for HT BUT for music is was like not even having a sub.It was ported  and only a 8"
So I hope since the SD12+ is a 12" it will be more musical and still proform well for HT

With all due respect to the REL followers, I agree completely with John. I researched subs for several months before making a decision and REL just didn't make the cut. Way too expensive for what you get. They've done a good job of playing the marketing game in the high-end press. Plus, I'm just not a believer in the bass reinforcement approach.

I also agree that ACI makes a good product. Mike is one of the "good guys" in audio. He's been building good speakers for many years. I didn't want to spend the money on the furniture grade box, so it came down to Bag End and M&K for me. I went with M&K because they seem to have a good reputation, warranty, the push-pull design for canceling 2nd harmonic distortion (no servos to break) and especially the bass management controller LFE-4. I now have two all M&K 2.1 systems and I have become one of their biggest fans.

I also want to point out that Hsu Research make excellent subs and associated crossovers.

SVS is new to me, but I really appreciate their honesty and lack of hype on their web site. I'll admit to being partial to products built in the US so I hope they continue to do well.

I'm sure once you get it calibrated with your Paradigm monitors, you'll be very pleased with the improvement over the PDR-8. Please let us all know how it turns out.

Best regards,
Bob

Ok all so I got my SVS SB12 PLUS yesterday and did not have much time to calibrate But I did run the auto set up from my denon 3805 d it looked something like this
mains +10
Center + 12
Rears + 8
SUB -5
at this set up I AGAIN was not happy with the amount of lows for MUSIC It was fine for HT
Saturday I will use my AVIA DVD and a spl to calibrate again
This is how I will set everything in the denon
All speakers to small
crossover 80Hz
LEF ( not LEF and main right)
in the sub I will set the gain to about 1/4  (thats what the manual said to start with)
I am confused about the Phase WHAT DO I DO WITH THAT ?
it has PEQ but I wont play with them yet so I will set it to off
Thanks again for all of your thoughts
Wish I had a true audiophile friend that would come over & tell me there thoughts on how it actuly sounds
I could be out of my mind and it sounds great  :duh:

I'd start by checking the channel levels in each mode.  The 3805 allows separate channel level settings for every mode on every input.  For instance, the CD input could have completely diff level settings for CD/PL2, CD/5CH Stereo, CD/Stereo, etc.  This includes the subwoofer setting.  Also, check the default level on DD/DTS.

Denon allows tremendous flexibility, but that can make it very complicated to get everything set right.  Trust your ears- if it doesn't sound right, it's not.  But I'm sure you can fix it. :)

I think I will start fresh Clear all & set back to factory
The DD DTS level should not effect the CD input (I use analog interconnects from my 3910 to my 3805) Right ?
How about the Phase knob on the sub how do I calibrate that properly
this sub also has Room compensation Small, med, large & bypass  I would think large since my room is open into the diningroom so its about 13x 25 and there is another 12x12 den of of the diningroom

Ok so its not calibrated yet but I did get to listen to some music Late last night when I got home and YES I probley  had to much gain on the sub BUT it sounded much better that the PDR
I was watching the Jammys on MSG & B52 did love shack and the bass guitar sounded great (the vocals was terrible performance but they did a great JAM & sounded great
Than I put in Zep how the west was won & Played Since Ive been loving you (think its my fav bluesy rock tune) and again sounded great MUCH more musical
Now once I calibrate it & bring down the gain it may be another story BUT Its ok to leave the gain on the sub up if it sounds good to me and makes me happy right ????

Ok so I did some playin around & calibrating thisafternoon & I am verry pleased
The one thing I did was set the SVS at half gain and than did adjustments on the denon
Once I had it dialed in for HT then I listened to some music & it sounded beter than my Pdr8 but my sox were not knocked off yet
so I left all ajustments on the denon alone & took out a sharpie marked the halfway point of the gain on the sub -played some music and slowly turned up the gain about another 1/3 or 1/4 and made another sharpie mark and will use the second mark for 2 chanell music listning
This sub sounds much better than my paradigm PDR8
Bass guitar sounds like bass guitar and the kick drum you can feel (at the 1/3 gain boost)
Much more musical
I have not hade a true chance to give it a true HT Test I was to concerned with getting the music to my liking
It may be a bit wrong on the set up but hell it sounds great to me now
Thanks all
