Fuse Questions (Hopefully I blew one)
« on: 2 Sep 2006, 01:10 am »
I did go through with my EBAY transaction and won a B&K EX4420 amplifier. Once I received it, it worked fine for a day and then today when I turned it on, nothing but a turn on thump. The red power light doesn't even come on. Hopefully it's the fuse.

I noticed that when I took the fuse out to inspect it, it has a white opaque body with a red band on one end  and a brown band on the other end. What's the significance of this?

Hey!

Sorry to hear that man!:| Just in time for a long weekend... suck isn't it? :(

Anyway, what you have there is a ceramic fuse type. Since you can't see it you will need a multi-meter to test it.

As for those color bands... I have no idea. Dose the amp come with manual? If so it should indicate what amp rating the fuse is. But what ever you do get the fuse that have the same amp rating and never higher.

I'm pretty sure other member would know something about that B&K you have. And if you put in a new fuse and it still blow than you have a bigger problem somewhere in the amp.

Anyway, goodluck.

Take care,

I checked the fuse with a voltmeter and it was fine so I pulled the cover and poked around the bit. There are 4 glass fuses inside each with a blue band on one end. I put the cover back on and now it powers up and works fine.

Chalk it up to audio gremlins.

Anyone know why there is a fuse 'on' the power cord and 4 fuses inside?

Hey!

Well, at least the amp work now. :D

I think those 4 glass fuses are to protect the amp circuits like when shorting out your speaker cables or something like that... not sure maybe those members who like to hang out at the "Lab" could fill in on this.

If the amp work fine than it could be just something loose inside. Maybe the power cable or connection got loose.... especially those with push on or screw on connection. It would not hurt to go over all the connections and make sure they are tight. Be careful with those cap inside your amp though. :D

Well, enjoy your amp. :D

They could also be on the +/- voltage rails from the power supply to the amp boards!?!

Gordy is almost certianly right, they are probably between the power supply and the output stage.
