Variable input to Aksa 55
« on: 31 Aug 2006, 10:30 am »
Hi all. I need to install a variable input to my 55n. Is it as easy as it appears. Can I just add a good pot across the input, and if so what would be a good value for the pot.
Thanks in advance.

Nigel

Yes it is easy. This article starts at the basics and gets more involved as you read.

I think 20k or 25k is the recommended value.

Hi Nigel,

I think Greg's given you the correct value but if you've been following the "Volume Setting ..." thread, you'll understand that there are pots ... and there are pots!   :)

The most expensive - but IMO the absolute best, sonically - would be a TKD stepped attenuator with some Vishay shunt resistors.  However, this is serious money (about US$370).

Read the thread and it will become clear.

Regards,

Andy

Thanks Greg, and Andy. Yes I will want to put a good pot in place. I dont want to hurt sonics.

Thanks again

You might want to try some of Scott Endler's attenuators.  I have a pair in my system (EastSound CD5 --> 55N+--> Ellis 1801b) while my GK-1 sits in the closet waiting to be built  :|  I've been quite happy with them as they allow the music to come out pure and simple.  For 80.00 plus shipping, they are hard to beat.

Variable input to Aksa 55... done it twice!

Nigel,
I've done exactly that twice.  I've built two "integrateds" using RCAs for multiple sources, a Grayhill selector switch, followed by a nice pot (the first was a 20K DACT, the second was the cermet pot that Hugh included with the GK-1... also 20K I think).  This works extremely well.

I like the GK-1 and TLP-N better than this passive setup, but that is just a matter of taste.  I think that many would find this passive setup extremely nice.

Cheers peter, I am going to use this more for amp level matching in a multi amp system. Thanks again
