Zhaolu D2.5 Dac
« on: 30 Aug 2006, 08:57 pm »
The DIYKITS website indicates that a new version of the Zhaolu DAC is coming out next month, the D2.5 Dac.  Not sure what the changes are, I haven't e-mailed Eddie, but just thought AC'ers might be interested.  Link: http://www.diykits.com.hk/.

Pricing indicates a cost of D2.5 with AD-1852 DA-Chip Price > HK $980.- (129USD).  Shipping from HK is additional.

These are sold as kits, right?  How easy/hard are they to put together?

I don't believe it is a kit... It looks like his site is DIY focused but the DAC is manufactured to be an end product.

Phil, the units are fully assembled.  I believe Larry (tianguis) and some other AC members have purchased the D2.0 version of this DAC.  I understand the City Pulse DAC's available from the site are also very, very good.

Thanks guys.  I'm just looking for a cheap upgrade to help my bedroom system:

JVC RX-F10 receiver
Toshiba 3950 DVD player
Aurum Cantus Leisure 2 monitors
DirecTV HD DVR satellite box

I know no-one has heard it, but anything think the Zhaolu D2.5 w/AD-1582 DAC chip would be an improvement?

I was told they also had a 30 day return policy if you didn't like it for some reason.

Phil:

The Zhaolu 2.0 gave a substantial performance increase when I ran my modded 3950 through it. However, the stock Citypulse outperforms the 2.0 in a very noticeable way.
I also found the Zhaolu 2.0 with the AD1852 chip to be lacking in texture and true detail compared to the CS4398 chip.

Try and find someone with the 1.3 version OR a 2.0 with Ori's modded output stage (doesn't get any better).  The stock 1.3 was substantially better than the 2.0 and you might find someone with one for sell if you go to headhifi.
