i have a new cd player pre amp and monoblocks.. but with older speakers b+w 303s. i have a budget of £1000 set for speakers.. my question is should i purchase new speakers before i move house? sept 2007 approx or invest this money into cables, connectors ,mains then resave the £1000 when i move into a new house.

gypsums, If you are willing to resave 1000 pounds I think you should wait until you have saved that additional amount of money and then you would have 2000 pounds to spend on speakers.

Makes more sense to wait, you won't have to worry about moving them and by the time your ready you can buy better speakers

Wait, you want to get speakers that work well in the room that will house them.  What you think will work well now is based on your current listening situation and since that may or will change you should wait

i may then dip into the money to buy cables, connectors, mains ect.. the only thing i a concerned about is because my speakers are not that great will the new cables be enough improvement of my old speakers to then be good enough for my new ones, if that makes sense

If you are moving within 6 months, I would not buy anything at all.  What if you buy cables and then learn your system has to go in different room for some reason... And that room doesn't require the same length of cord you thought it would.  Or you wish the cord was more flexible because it had to go in a rack... or etc... And that's just for cables.

I can't imagine buying a speaker for a home I don't yet live in.  One of the worst parts of moving is having to figure out how to get your system dialed-in again.... No sense in adding to that frustration from the beginning.

Despite all of the controversy you may have herd about speaker cables, as long as your cables are of decent quality and properly terminated, a more expensive cable won't give you any better performance.

Save you money for the speakers.

Cables are last in order of priority to me but very rewarding nonetheless.  They make a much bigger difference if the speakers, room, and system have been properly setup.  People are often lured into buying cables to solve other problems only to later find that they got a much bigger improvement by implementing room treatments and experimenting and measuring speaker distances.  (the latter being free)
