any suggestions?  I need at least 2.75 V output and would like a remote for volume.  Analog volume would be great too - thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Tony,
Monarchy Audio has a Tube Pre/Dac, no remote, that I believe can be bought for less than $1k.
FWIW Bound for Sound gave it a very good review.

I have a pair of Monarchy's hybrid amps and am very pleased with them.

Thanks Lin, hehe - I actually just returned that unit.  Had it for about 3 weeks and didn't find it on par with my modified Tact.  For the $$ though it may be hard to beat!  It was a bit darker sounding than the Tact/Dac combo although very musical.

Another suggestion, tube pre only, no remote, SAS Audio Labs 11a @ $2400-$2600.
Very, very nice sounding.
