P-8 with 4 RCA inputs?
« on: 24 Aug 2006, 04:39 pm »
Can the P-8 be built with all 4 of the inputs using RCA connectors instead of input 4 having a 3.5mm connector?

There is no space left at the back panel to fit 4 pairs of RCA inputs.

Mike is there a performance hit by using the 3.5mm input over the RCA inputs?

Jason from what I've seen of photos of the P-8 and looking at the rear panel of an I-7 in my friends shop the 3.5 mm inputs don't appear to take up any less room on the back of the chassis than RCA jacks would.  The lack of a 4th RCA input is the one thing that is preventing me from purchasing a P-8.  In my set up I require 3 inputs plus a HT bypass.

there is a head phone jack below the 3rd output and thats the reason for not having rcas there, for what i am using input 3 for i can not tell any differences in sound, like i said i am using it for my cable box, i use my system for my tv sound,  i have had surround sound and i am not missing much with two channel, in the case of a movies sound, if i am just fooling around the house and dont want to deal with changing  cds, i put on one of the music channels on my cable box, let me say this, my phono goes to input 1 and thats for sit down listening, and the p-8 ref-9se combo is hard to beat, mike :D

Thanks Mike.  One last question anyone.  Can the balanced and single ended outputs be used at the same time?  Ideally I would like to use balanced to Ref 9's and the single ended to my stereo subs.

Yes, XLR and RCA outputs can be used at the same time. Some people have also used it for bi-amping.

I've noticed that room for a 4th pair of RCA inputs has been found for the upgraded IA-7.  The P-8 appears to use the same chassis.

Unlike P8, IA7 does not offer any headphone output, and there is no provision for 2 pre-amp outputs.  3.5mm is the best compromise, as cheap RCA to 3.5mm adapters, such as:

Can easily be found.

In fact, most P8 customers forget that P8 comes with a high-performance headphone output.
