AKG K1000 + RWA Sig. 30
« on: 23 Aug 2006, 04:32 am »
Greetings.

I have a Sig. 30 on order, and will be using it mainly with a pair of Omega 3XRS (also yet to arrive). The other use is to drive the AKG K1000. My understanding of switching amps is somewhat sketch, but my current understanding is that switching amps use capacitors to control the high frequencies, including ultrasonic frequencies that come from the switching process. I was under the impression that with most switching amps, the 120ohm load of the K1000 causes problems for these capacitors, resulting in the transmission of ultrasonics and a peak in the audible high frequencies. The solution for other class D and T amps has been to place a 6-8ohm resistor in parallel with the speaker outputs so that the amp 'sees' a 6-8ohm load.

Is this relevant to the Sig. 30, or should I not worry about it?

Hi TheSloth,

Welcome to Audiocirlce and the RWA forum!

You can try using an 8-ohm resistor across the speaker outputs when using your K1000s, but I do not feel it is necessary.  The K1000s certainly sound fantastic with the Signature 30 without the resistors used.

Here is a mini-blog on Headfi.com about the Signature 30 vs. Nelson Pass Firstwatt F1 used as an amp for the K1000s:
http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=191991&highlight=Signature

The Signature 30 was the amp that was the keeper

The customer of mine who started that mini-blog (his name is Kent) told me that he preferred the sound without the resistors.  Srajan Ebaen of 6moons mentioned using the Signature 30 with the K1000s in this review:
http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/redwine4/30.html

He was not using any external resistors and was very pleased with the sound.

If you can, try it both ways and decide what works best for you.  There is no harm to the Sig 30 or K1000s in not using the resistors.  I spoke to AKG tech support months ago about this and they told me that it was not an issue.

Best regards,

Vinnie

I am also a RWA Signature 30 owner, who uses it with my AKG K1000s headphones.  I use it without resistors, and I am very happy with the result.  This amplifier is a perfect match for the K1000s and gives "endless hours of pleasureable listening".  Highly recommended!  :D

Hah, after posting this I ended up selling the K1K, but my Sig. 30 is still on its way for delivery today!

Hi tmarshl,

Thank you for your feedback here (and on headfi) about the Signature 30 + AKG K1000 headphone pairing!  I was able to hear this combo for myself and it made me want to get a pair of K1000s....and I'm not a headphone guy  :green:

I daydream of bringing a chair, iModded iPod, Sig 30, and K1000s down the road to a nearby pond and working on my computer (answering emails and audiocircle posts, of course! ) while watching the ducks swimming and the autumn leaves falling while I breath in the crisp air and listenmto my favorite albums.

Alas, I am locked in this basement!  :violin:

But I have my music!  :guitar:

Thanks again,

Vinnie
