how to i.d. 4th gen 60g ipod photo?

Hey gang, I have been kicking around the idea of getting an ipod but have been put off by the sound quality of the one's I've demo'd.  I happened to read about the Red Wine mod that increases the sound quality but want to make sure I get the right Ipod for the mod.  Are all 60gb ipod photo's of the 4th gen vintage? Is there a way to tell that it is from the 4th gen?

Also, if I get a mod'ed ipod, can I just hook it up to a headphone amp to use it portably with headphones?  Thanks in advance, I appologize if these a simple questions, I'm a newbie

Hi Steve,

Welcome to Audiocircle and the RWA forum!

I can iMod any of the iPod Photo units.  These are also called "color iPods," but they are NOT the Video iPods (5th gen).  There are also the 4th Gen iPods with a monochrome screen (no color).  They look just like the iPod Photo but the screen does not have color.

Yes, you feed the modded iPod's line output (constant voltage) into a headphone amp and that powers your headphones.

You cannot connect headphones directly into the iMod because the headphone output jack is converted into a line-out jack with a constant voltage (which is too loud for headphones AND not meant to drive the low impedance of headphones).

Hope this helps,

Vinnie
