new room:

current room:

ceilings in both rooms are 9'

which room would work better acoustically?  I'd be moving all my acoustic treatments into the new room - I could also put the speakers on the left wall I guess...??   I'm worried that the speakers won't be placed symmetrically.  I could get some stands for the GIK panels so I could move them around.  Another problem is I only have 1 dedicated outlet on the north wall and 2 other regular outlets.  My current room has 3 dedicated outlets.  Another problem is I'd get refrigarator noise ;( and theres a 12'x8' glass slider on the right wall - it is covered with a lined silk drape.  I didn't spend much time on this so the kitchen is out of wack and not scaled properly..  Any opinions??

Thanks very much  :D :D

If you can stay in the room you're in, do so.  It's easier to control, much more symmetric, etc.

The only thing I'd recommend is get rid of some of the FBM foam as you're likely overabsorbing the highs for 2 channel listening and also move your seat up to about 38% from the back wall.

Hi,  yeah I can stay,  was just curious.  Which FBM did you mean?  The upper corners or bass columns or?  The wedge panel on the front wall actually works well - without it imaging is kinda scattered about - with it its nice and tight.  Wow... 38% is like 5 feet from the back wall, hmmm..

Thanks!

Yes - like 5' approx.  This will also let you get the main speakers out of the corners a bit more for better, smoother bass response.

My concern with the FBM is that it's giving the room an awful lot of HF absorbtion.  The GIK panels' absorbtion characterstics provide much better bass control while not being as absorbant at high frequencies.  The rear bass absorber (corner) and the columns behind you are the ones I was looking at.

I would stick with the current set up.  Much easier to tame room#2 as opposed to room #1, also I think with room #1 your options would be very limited.

If the reason for the move is to have a music system in a more open area I would just put a buget system there and keep the reference system where it is.

thanks everyone for the advice  :)  I was just getting a little claustophobic in the small room.  Since I have the only window covered with an 8'x4' panel it's dark too.  I only have a small eyebrow at the top of the window that lets light in  :|

Thanks

heheh  :D  Now I'm wondering if I put the speakers and equipment along the long wall to the right then I could have my window back - would this setup work?  I'd try it but it's a lot of work to move everything ;)

Thanks for any opinions ;)

no opinions?  :o  And another question - are my 8'x4'x2" solid fiberglass panels absolutely necessary behind the speakers??

Thanks

I think you'd be better off keeping the gear on the short wall.  Better to leave some room behind your listening seat than to be right up against the back wall IMHO...

Are the two 8x4(Silent Source) panels I have behind the speakers necessary for good sound?  I ask because it would be a big pain to move them out of the way without moving the speakers which are spiked etc... I have the panels because they worked very well with my Acoustats, but are they really necessary for this room/speakers?  I'd sure like to get some light from the window which I could cover with a thick drape.

Thanks - sorry for my redundancy ;)
