I'm in the process of simplifying my 2 channel setup.  I'm using Carver's ZR1000 Tripath based Digital amplifier and a pair of Martin Logan SL3's.  After trying a half dozen amps, the Carver really makes the SL3's sing.  My only source is a Samsung HD950 which I use for SACD, CD, DVD-A, and my favorite show's burned to MP3.  I use the volume controls on the Carver in case you're wondering.  It is a very pleasing setup for the money but I know there's alot more potential with a better source.

I would really like to find a True DSD output player with True internal balancing and XLR outputs to match my Carver's input.  Of course,  I would like the player to be inexpensive.  Universal players welcome.

Any suggestions?

Just a quick update.  I've considered buying any number of the budget players out there and adding LC audio's Zapfilter Mk II which claims to add balanced output to ANY player but this would easily be over $500 which I no longer consider a "budget" player.  Once again,  any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

I don't know what is your definition of "budget" :) because true balanced XLR seems to be a feature mostly available to mid- to high-end gears.  If you don't mind shopping in the used market, the first one that comes to my mind is Marantz SA14 v1 or v2.  With a couple hundred more, you may able to find one modded by TRL, which would be better than the stock.  However, please be aware that polarity on Marantz (2-, 3+) is reversed compared to the typical US balanced gears (2+, 3-).  Good luck with your search.

Any 'balanced' connections on a budget type of player are going to inherently be compromises; in fact I've yet to be convinced they ever offer a meaningful improvement for a typical stereo.

Hi HCHi,
As an aside, I'm a little worrried now, I'm awaiting a Kimber KCAG XLR cable to link my Marantz SA11S1 SACDP in balanced mode to my Krell 400XI amp, I didn't realise about the differences in polarity between these products, I assume that it'll sound poor (or is it dangerous?) if I link these components using the Kimber, how can I rectify this?
Thanks

Alan,
Due to the reverse polarity, the sound image you hear would most likely be out of phase and sounded diffused. There are a few things you can do:
1. Reverse speaker wires'  + and - connections to the speakers.  This is the cheapest approach.  However, this assumes you have no other source components in your system. Otherwise, you will need to switch the speaker wires back normal when listening from other sources.  Remember to turn the amp off  while attempting this.
2. I don't remember that Krell 400xi has this function. But on some preamp, they have a reverse polarity switch.  If you like SA11, that may be something to consider for the next upgrade.
3. If the XLR cables are purchased new from a dealer, you should be able to request a custom-made with reverse of polarity. -- not recommended.
4. If you are going to send the unit for mod, it would be a good idea to ask the modder to reverse polarity for you.
5.  Just stay with single ended RCA and make your life easier.  However, many true balanced design gears sound better (to various degree) when connected XLR.

Hopefully this will give some insights. Many European gears and some US gears (such as Jeff Rowland) also have the polarity reversed. Good luck.

HCHi,
Luckily I have only the Marantz so I'll reverse the polarity at the speakers
Thanks for you help

Levi

Try a used Adcom 750 CD player.  Hopefully, your amp/preamp is fully balanced.  Good luck.

You can buy my Sony XA777ES and I'll install the Zapfilter to it for you.   :D

The Sony XA777ES is one of the best in SACD reproduction.
