"critical listening"  - only when evaluating products or modifications. This is usually about 2-3 times a week and spend a good amount of time per session "critically" listening to make sure things are in order.

"Casual listening" - All day while at work. There is always at least one system running while I am at the benches.

"Listening for enjoyment" - Not as often as I would like. Once in a while, I will shut the soldering stations down about a half hour to an hour before leaving just to sit down and enjoy the music. This is usually when the turntable gets spinning! What system I listen to depends on my mood.

I rarely get any listening time at home. 4 kids a wife and football practice 4 nights a week leaves me little time. Most of my "free time" goes into work on the house. I don't even get to look at a TV till 11 o'clock at night.

Not nearly enough, as my listening room (spare bedroom) is alongside the familyroom where my youngest brother has his 2-channel/HT setup (which is almost aways on after work)...maybe 1 hour during the weekdays. My bro also works the weekends, so if I'm home during the weekends and not out, then my system's on nearly 48 hours! :thumb:

My listening room is also the living room so from the time I get home 6ish to about 9 ish  its on as backround with the Digital cable music choice Ch 829 Jazz
My commute to & from work is about an hour each way on the train & I don't know what I would do with out my Ipod & I Love my Ultimate Ears Headphones ,block out all of the chit chat from the train
I get about 1 hour Saturday am to have the house to my self and ENJOY

8-10 hours daily when I'm in the home office (not travelling, which of late, is a lot).

Rarely 'critical' howver...just often I get to listen

There's something to be said for intergration.
With my family room as my listening environment where I have the HT, PC and 2 channel setup, I can get 2-4 hours of general listening done on most weekdays and a solid 4-6 hrs on the weekends if desired.

Having my PC connected to my Plasma TV has been a saving grace, can't go back to anything less. So this command central approach has worked wonders for me.  The ability to watch TV and surf the net on the plasma, lower the projection screen for movies and listen to music critically all from my couch is almost an utopia. Being able to switch back and forth at the touch of a button is wonderful, otherwise I would not even be able to participate on these forums.  The only thing I could ask for is obviously being able to treat the room more properly for sound an video.

What a good thread.  It seems people are doing more listening than I would have guessed.

I do a lot, myself, but I have no children as of yet and am not yet married either, and am fortunate to have a girlfriend who likes music nearly as much as I do.

During the week, I generally get a couple hours on the 2nd system, in the garage, where I am building an airplane and consequently spend a of time.  Usually an hour on the main system, in the living room as well.  (I think it's cool so many people are using the living room for their "serious" system and building integrating it with HT as well, as I have.  My 2-channel system is "no-compromis" with HT put on top of it, not "integrated" with it.)

Weekends usually mean a few hours each day in front of the main system - more when the weather makes being inside sensible.

If I want I can listen to my system about 3 hours a night during the week.  Now I am a movie guy as well so that includes music and movies.  That is the max.  Some times it is less depending on what is on TV.  Now the week ends, Sat for example, that can go way up.  Sun if I want to during the day up until 9:00pm.  Then it is time for DeadWood :thumb:.

I was thinking myself  that with Deadwood on I listen less.

Once the TV is on the mood is different and I am less likely to listen to music. Same with Curb Your Enthusiasm or Rome. HBO has me watching something every Sunday night these days.

Can't believe there is only one more episode, and that may be it for the show!

These days I listen to 4 to 6 CDs a week. This week I will finally listen to a lot more since I will be home for a few days.

Please say that it isn't so :o :x.
That is my favorite HBO show.  Followed by Rome and Sopranos.

I read about it on some Deadwood forums - apparently no one has been renewed for next season and there is talk of two 2 hour movies instead. I am sure things could change but...

Yep.  It looks that way.  I too saw that they were thinking of 2 2hr movies for the 4th season.  The real Dead Wood burned to the ground after 4 years so that was the time line they were following.  They sited that the cast is just to big and that it is just a pile of money to keep it going.  Oh well.  At least I still have House   :thumb:.  Also I read that Rome may only be one more year as well.  Just when they are getting good....

I finally got a dedicated listening room in the basement, since we rebuilt the house. But because we rebuilt the house I have tons of odds and ends that still need to be completed. Then there's quality time with the wife and kids. Oh yeah, and 11-12 hour workdays including the commute. And it's summer, so any chance I get I like to be outside or in the pool, since I rarely see daylight on weekdays.

Bottom line is, I felt guilty this weekend and finally plugged the system in and turned it on for an hour for the first time in about a month. Whoopee ... dedicated listening room that gets just about no use :(

But there's always wintertime when I'm certain I can get 2-3 hours per week in the sweet spot. Not much by the standards of others I see posted here, but a busy life is a happy life I always say.  It just makes the audio time that much more enjoyable. :thumb:

Notice I said audio time, which is different from music time. I listen to 2 CD's a day on my Walkman commuting to and fro to work. :green:

Enjoy,
Bob

Bob, you need to become a creature of the night.  Since getting my basement dedicated man-room, once the kids are asleep, I close the door to the basement and just relax with the music...  8) <----sunglasses at night....

Missed you at the Rave this weekend...! :(

I listen to a vintage setup while on my computer a couple of hours a day and usually listen 1.5-2 hours a night throughout the week to my main system. Having my man cave pretty much sound isolated let's me listen as loud as I like whenever but find it's not truly relaxing until my wife and daughter are in bed. For some reason those two think that they can just yell down at me on their every whim :?

So in effect I listen casually half the time and intently the other half.

warnerwh,

That's why my "man-cave" has a dead bolt on the door.  I use it rarely, but it serves as a reminder that it is a private get away.
