Power One PS mod
« on: 10 Aug 2006, 11:27 pm »
For those who are using a Power One power supply for the SB, I have come up with a very nice mod for it.

I have replaced the diodes with HexFREDs.

I have updated and upgraded all the electrolytic capacitors with Panasonic FMs and BlackGate "NX" series bypass.

I can wire the PowerOne for either 120 or 240 VAC operation.

The mods DO NOT include any case or case work.

Cost is $120.00 for the mods. The PowerOne is not included.

Please contact me by PM or E-mail if you are interested in this mod.

Hi Wayne!

How will you rate this PS (with mods done) compared to a modded Elpac PS -and then again compared to the Ultimate PS MKII?

Best Regards,
Nik

Nik,

I have not listened to it. I changed the parts for the one in the picture as a special request for a customer. He will have to put the Power-One in a case and wire up the input and output connectors and the fuse. He will also have to decide what the wiring is going to be from the Power One to the SB.

It should be a bit better sounding than the modded ELPAC but not even close to the Ultimate.

The Ultimate PS is really a "system" It is designed with either the Nitro or Summit DC cable. Some folks have tried to build their own DC cable, but it does not sound as good as the ones I make.

I will be introducing a Summit AC cable for the Ultimate PS MKII at RMAF. Ballpark price around $500.00. Preliminary testing and comparisons have this cable preferred over the Black Sand Violet or Silver MK IV

Last night I finally got the first Bolder modded Power One  PS operating. An ongoing home remodeling project accounted for the delay. I built a custom case and have wired the Power One temporarily to my SB3. I will upgrade the wiring and insert the Acme Audio Labs silver/ceramic fuse when the break-in is complete.

My initial impression of the SQ is that the soundstage has expanded some especially in depth. The dynamics and details have improved along with greater emotional impact from the music.
However, this morning the SQ did not sound quite as good. This might be because the break-in process has just started (8 hours) so I'm definitely looking forward  to the day when those Blackgates have had sufficient exercise. aa

Thank you for your comment on the modded PS.

The new capacitors will take some time to fully form. Until that happens the sound of the system will constantly change.

Going from past experiences with DC power supplies, you have to get about 3 weeks of constant use on the PS for it to settle down.

Wayne,
I will be running the PS 24/7, albeit sometimes at very low power, until it breaks in. Sometimes the treble can be a little irritating which will require a volume adjustment.

I've had my Modded SB and PS ( not sure what version) for 2 1/2 weeks now,  and it has improved a lot ... When I hooked them up for the first time,  it was sounding good but the bass was not right and the treble was very unrefined.       Nothing of that now,    It's sounding very full and I'm getting more atmosphere.    about 300 hours on the clock :thumb:

I'm going to get my SB3 modded soon so I will have to go through another break-in period. :(  About 12 days of around the clock operation will get close to 300 hours. I should have had both devices modded at the same time. :duh: On the positive side, I will get to appreciate what each mod adds to the sound quality. :)

Hi niknik,

Love the avatar, works at many levels. :D

I always wonder what people think when I say, "I played with my Squeezebox all weekend".

BTW: Anyone got the schematic of the PSU in its original state.
