Need a good book on cabinet building
« on: 8 Aug 2006, 11:36 am »
I want to try a speaker project but do not have very much knowlege in this area. I have a few books on speaker design but they are very vauge on the boxes. I am looking for a very detailed book on the art of box making. Any suggestions?

You will likely find more info on the net.  Most of the cabinet/furniture construction books I own deal with entirely different types of joinery.  Post your woodworking question here or Partsexpress board and you will get all the help you need.  if you research lock-mitre router bits on the net you will eventually run into some good tips on box construction.  Also you willfind good tips if you research display stands, these seem to be the closest thing to speaker cabs (sans extensive bracing).

Christof, are you actually using lock mitre joints for speaker building?  Looks interesting.  I've only used straight butt joints or on occasion a half lap joint. As long as your cuts are square, just straight glue (clamped and maybe a screw or brad here or there to keep things aligned during glue-up/drying) seems to provide enough strength.  Is the benefit of lock mitre for alignment of strength?

Ever use biscuits to help align?  If so, ever in MDF?  What about fitting braces, do you rabbet them in, or just butt joint?

I use lock-mitre joinery for the sides, top and bottom.  A lock mitre is very strong because the glue surface area is increased by probably 50% and it cuts a perfect 45*, it's not essential but I rely pretty heavy on it.  Assembly is a piece of cake with a lock mitre but is it worth spending $500 to get the whole set-up?  Yes to all your other questions....whatever works

I am currently working on my first DIY speaker and have found the people at http://www.diyaudio.com/ to be very helpful with what probably seem like stupid questions.  Good luck.
