Why not try Jon Risch's quick & dirty bass traps? You can make 4- 4 footers in a day and if you cover them with grille cloth they are not an eye sore. Although my ratty looking ones are covered in burlap, they are quite effective.

I wish this idea would work too.  I've read enough of Ethan's responses to not research further....but what if we cut holes in the tubes Ethan?? :D  Lots of holes.

Great minds think alike!  I've been considering this for a couple years.  I seems like a person could use a jigsaw or hole saw to perforate the heck out of a tube and use it to wrap a Risch-style 'glass trap.  A great advantage of this approach, in theory, is that the bottom 4-6" could be solid to preclude any chance of air leaks where the bass of the tower meets the sides.  So far I've been far too lazy to try this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work provided you don't remove so much material as to weaken the tube to the point of structural failure.

Sounds like it should work-so get off your butt and let us know! A hole saw sounds way more efficient than a jig saw by the way.

It would be for making lots of holes.  With a jigsaw you could cut large vertical slots out, which would be a lot faster.  You'd probably want to avoid going the full height, maybe two sections.

Mark, don't know if you've built the Jon Risch's traps many times or not, but I built 4 four footers, my first time, and it took more than a day, and that was with another friend.  It took us two days, at least, of cutting particle boards, hogwire, and fiberglass.  It's not as easy as it looks!

Then covering it with burlap, that took some time too!

Could drill the holes, probably much quicker?

Sonny, I am speaking of "The Super Quick and Dirty" version, where you just stacks 15" rolls of fibreglass together, tape them up and cover them. They are said to be 80% as effective as the hog wire version with 10% the effort to make them.

Ah...actually, that's the best and easiest way to see if the bass traps will actually give you what you want!!!

I remember when Emerald Sound Studio was still owned by Deb-Dave Briarpatch, the Malloy's publishing company.  They got all excited that they had found this source for giant sized foam cubes.  I mean like 7ft cubed.  They had a half dozen or so delivered to the studio, they were used for about a week or so, then poof!  they were gone and never heard from again!
