What if you have multiple squeezeboxes in multiple rooms (as I do)?

That is a cool system, though, and cheap.  Really cheap compared to other systems.

Each SB has its own settings, so it handles multiple squeezeboxes in multiple rooms just fine (as long as you have enough CPU power on the PC to handle the processing).

I'd be curious to give it a shot and compare against more established methods of room correction.

The whole process is a little clunky compared to the other more expensive commercial solutions.

Question:

The software is trial and will expire on October 1.... what's the retail price going to be?  There is no mention of this anywhere that I could see on the site.  Trying to get a few folks hooked and then bring out the surcharge so they have to have it at that point regardless of price?  It's a good strategy :)

I'm not using it but I certainly will shortly. I will probably keep my REL instead of upgrading to a Velodyne digital subwoofer or SMS-1 plus a preamp as I planned to do, to say nothing of the even more expensive DEQX.

Its Clunky cos its trial/beta software, there have been discussions about this on the slimdevices forums, Hugh/Inguz said he would put expiry dates on the software to ensure that no older/poorer versions hung around, there has been no mention of paying for this ever.

Presumeably since this is using DRC, you should be able to do phase coherent EQ, since FIR filters can be generated via DRC iirc.  Time alignment suggests you are using the FIR filters to do active crossovers in the digital domain.  There is no way to output multiple outputs from the SB, so I would suggest probably not.   I guess if you were really clever you could do some funny stuff with phase to attempt to time align the aggregate speaker, but I don't think it would be trivial.

Time, phase and amplitude.

In a typical example (looking at a single channel), you might have a two-way speaker with the bass and treble slightly misaligned, with some box resonances, and a nearby wall reflecting the sound too.  The measurement of this is an impulse response at a single position. DRC knows nothing about the geometry of your speaker and room, but it does aim to correct that impulse response.

If you have a near-perfect impulse response at this single position, then effectively you've time- and phase-aligned your loudspeaker *without* using an active crossover (and attenuated early reflections, too) -- for this listening position; outside the sweet spot your mileage may vary.

Interesting -- they're not using MLS to generate the frequency response at the listening position.  Instead, they're using a sweeped signal.  It does appear to be a poor man's TACT.  I'm very impressed that someone did this.  If you really can send different information to each Squeezebox, I'll definitely consider implementing this, when they tell me what the price will be.  I had considered implementing this myself, but this looks fairly easy to implement.

By "I considered implementing this myself", I meant that I had planned on implementing a similar system on computer.  By having it on Squeezebox, it makes it easier.
