Virtual Soundwave Simulator
« on: 1 Aug 2006, 02:48 pm »
Does anyone know of any software or downloads for a virtual soundwave simulator?  Basically what I wish to do is be able to construct a room and be able to see how the sound behaves with specific variables.

There are room simulator programs like Cara and RPG's Room Optimizer, but they may not be as useful as you'd like. There are also room mode calculators that can sort of predict the problem bass frequencies, but they too are less accurate than actually measuring a real room.

What exactly do you have in mind, and how do you intend to use the information?

I think with something like this implemented, one would be able to more effectively treat problematic areas.

One could set up a program with the partial differential equations for sound then use finite element analysis to determine variation at each point.  I'm not sure anyone has done this, though.  Have you seen this:

Also, what variables would you like to examine?  The latest Journal of Audio Engineering Society (Vol. 54, No. 6, June 2006) has a "scientific review" article.  I'm only part way through the article, but it points out how little we still know about rooms, reflections, and human interpretation thereof.

I don't find that at all surprising, and it explains why we don't have software that can accurately model a room.  Is the Journal available online?

Only to AES members. It's worth the $95/year dues.
