Overheating 2B?
« on: 27 Jul 2006, 07:36 pm »
My trustworthy 2BLP is strangely overheating... Any idea of what may cause this?

I did not observe this before. The case is very hot and I couldn't leave my finger on it for over 3 seconds...

The amp doesn't pump over .5 or 1 watt (high efficiency speakers - small lab). Sound is fine, but heat is problematic...

Hi James

As far as I can tell, both sides are pretty hot.

The system changes everyday, I use my Bryston in my developement work for Atelier Speakers and Gemme Audio.

As said all speakers are efficient and have no crossover in the circuit. All connections seems to be OK, indicator lamps are green...

I tried a different amp I had around (an old Pionner ss) with no overheating problem, so iI'm a bit puzzled...

Would it help diagnostic if I left the amp on with nothing connected (no input, no speaker cables)?

Yes it would help with nothing connected - if it is the bias.

Tried it yesterday with no music (preamp off): still overheating
Will try today with no music (preamp off) and no speaker cables attached and report back.
Thanks

Preamp off
No speakers connected - no wires
Still getting hot, same for the two sides.
Any idea?

Hi Robert,

Sounds like the bias circuit needs to be adjusted.
Contact service at Bryston.
Are you in US or Canada?

I have a 2B-Lp and it gets hot to the touch as well. I think this is normal operating temp. for this unit. My 3B-SST in comparison is just warm to the touch.

The amp would get hot overtime, but these days it's really really hot with no reason. I could probably cook an egg on the top cover...
.... but I'm not sure I'd like to eat it
