Ultra 550's and Magnepan 20.1
« on: 23 Jul 2006, 10:29 pm »
A few months ago I decided to actively biamplify my magnepan 20.1's. While looking at possible amps I accidentally came across the AVAHIFI site. At first, I couldn't believe such (how dare I say it) "reasonably" priced amps could compete with the best. However, all the postings on this site and Audioreview convinced me it's worth taking a chance. I ordered a pair of Ultra 550 about 3 months ago and they finally arrived about 2 weeks ago. I tell anyone considering these amps with the magnepans...JUST DO IT. These amps are truly world class. The bass is not only deep, but it's really fast and tight. The 20.1's are capable of truly extended and airy highs, and these amps provide that in spades. The mids are just plain beautiful and real. From top to bottom the music is balanced and effortless. I swear my Maggies are smiling. Thumbs up
One recommendation is to give these amps room to breathe, they run a bit on the hot side.

Congratulations. Could you describe the rest of your system (preamp, source) and what you like about the Maggie's 20.1, one of the few commercial speakers that I would love to hear... on my lust list. Too bad they're no longer carried around Seattle area.

thanks,

Al

Preamp: Wyatech Opal
Sources: VPI HRX w/Grado Signature and Sony XA7ES
Crossover: Marchand XM44

I just love the Maggies. They are the most musical and balanced from top to bottom speakers I ever had. I find it easy to forget them and just get into the music. All the other speakers I've had till now were very good, yet never let me forget they are there. One thing if you're considering Maggies, also consider a pair of Myesound stands. The factory supplied stands suck.

If I was running Maggies, I would figure out a way to clamp them to the ceiling too, to take all of the "wobble" out of the stand mounting the best as possible.  I tried that once years ago, the effect was much like adding a subwoofer to the system and dialing in the "focus" control a whole bunch.

Regarding Frank's suggestion; the Meysound stands do remove the wobble the Maggies suffer with their factory-supplied stands. They consist of heavy steel bottoms with rods that attach to the speakers about 2/3 of the way up. Check out their website. They are well worth it.
