Danny,

The subject is the question.  Could you please advise us on when the new woofers will be available for general purchase and when the driver information will be posted on your website?  I am ready to start a new project and I would like to use some of your new woofers.

Best regards,
Eric

8 ohm 6.5" woofer witj XBL^ (M-165X) will be ready for shipping next week. Then they will take about 4 weeks to get here via ocean.

Are these the ones with an Fs of 34Hz, and an X-max of 7.8mm each way?   :o

Any idea how much you'll sell them for? Would it be possible to build a new crossover (that you design, of course) that would allow these to be used as an upgrade to the x-ls (or perhaps any of the upcoming floorstanders you designed for the x-series)?

No, These are not the woofers to be used in the LS series speakers. These are the 8 ohm version, with a lighter weight cone, different dust cap, non-truncated frame. It has a 40Hz Fs, but also has the big X-max.

That is a standard M-130 next to it.

$45.95 each.

I don't think so, and for that application I don't see it being worth it. It does share the same frame as the woofer used in the X-ls though.  :D

Danny,

Are the specifications for this driver the same as you provided a few months past in one of the OB threads?  If so, when I model the driver in Unibox 4.07 the provided Vb with minimal fill is 71 litres for a ported box.  Wow, that appears to be a large enclosure for a 6.5-in driver but I am no expert.  I am able achieve smaller box sizes with no problem (more fill, etc.) but I am wondering how you envision this driver to be used in the DIY environment.  Which of the new drivers are you using in the Open Baffle speakers?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Cheers,
Eric

They changed a thing or two since the first unit that I approved. It looks even better now.

Try these figures:

MANUFACTURER    GR
MODEL           M-165X
DATE            7-20-06
Fs              40.1152
Fs Added Mass   22.8066
Added Mass      25.0000
Diameter        132.1000
Re              5.6000
Rms             1.0990
Qms             2.7385
Qes             0.5260
Qts             0.4413
Cms             1.3183
Mms             11.9399
BL              5.6603
VAS             34.5789
dBSPL           88.3001
L 1kHz          0.8683
L 10kHz         0.3618
SD              0.0137

I took these off of one of the sample drivers a few days ago after some burn in time.

I get optimal ported of 1.27 cubic feet with a -3db down at 36.7Hz.

You could squeeze it into .7 cubic feet of so if you wanted. You could also use it in a sealed box.

I wanted to keep the Qts a little on the high side to get really good low end extension in small floor standing speaker and for possible open baffle applications too. I have a few in mind already.   :thumb:

How hard would these be to drop into the lower woofer section of the current OB's. I gues you would need four per side to keep it 8 ohms. Gain some extension probably over the m130's ported also.

Danny Richie

That would change too much. The front face of the speaker would get wider and the air space needed for the M-165X woofers is much larger than what is needed for the M-130.

The OB-7 really doesn't need the extra extension because it has a powered sub in the bottom.

The OB-5 will hit a -3db down of 45Hz and it is pretty ideal for use with a sub.

I have an idea for a completely new model though.

So when are we due to see new bookshelf speakers with these new drivers?

Danny Richie

The designs that I do with the new drivers will be new ones. The first ones might be designs for Raw Acoustics using their new ribbon tweeter.
