I seem to recall Rick saying at one point that he was working on a version with a less expensive woofer. The retail price on the Excels needed here is over $1800  :o

Concerning Gary's login problems, I've emailed him and we'll get this sorted soon.

Brad V,
Please don't put words in my mouth, and please don't turn this in to a pissing contest over who's speaker is better.

I beg to differ.  Based on the wholesale cost of components I do not believe the array you speak off would approach that of the RM 40, which has, at $4950pr including shipping, better and more expensive parts in every area, plus superpremium crossovers.  After 27 years in this business I know of which I speak.  Your speculation is just that, and not supported by facts.

Yes, please don't argue about which 7 foot tall awesome-sounding monster speaker sounds more awesome than the other.  How about this; if you can afford either the Excellarray or the RM40 consider yourself blessed and rock on.

Oh come on..we could use some new additions to the Fight Club

I will agree with you guys..Nathan and Tyson....especially considering it is so difficult to do any direct A/B comparisons between speakers of this size and weight. Plus speakers are still always subjective anyways..so we should all just find what we love..and try to get to the point where we can just enjoy the music  8)

I must admit that owning the 40's has spoiled me a bit as far as the quality of sound I'm used to hearing.  It takes a lot to impress me, but the Excelarrays did impress me, they are indeed extremely fine speakers.  But it's not the Excelarrays that I lust after, its the dedicated listening room  :D

Tyson:  have you tried moving the 40's to the view side of the room only out about 4' from the window wall?  I cannnot remember how long your couch is but conceivably it could be a room seperater from the kitchen, into the living room.  I only mention in because a little distance between you and the speaker, speaker and back wall would only make the sound more awesome.  Anyway, they sounded damn good as is.

brad,
That's a no-no, the wife won't tolerate huge speakers blocking any part of the view of the mountains. . .

I think you may have my speaker confused with another design. One of the Seas woofers would cost more than the woofer in your speaker. The Newform ribbons are also much more expensive than the planar drivers that you use. The crossovers also use Audiocap Theta caps on the ribbons and all inductors are 14awg Solen Perfect Lay coils.

This is not intended to start a shouting match - I just wanted to clarify things. VMPS has a good reputation and I think your speakers are very fairly priced compared to most of the other commercial speakers on the market.

We make our own woofers (80oz magnets, 300W power handling) with woven carbon fiber/natural rubber cone stock we import ourselves.  So how much do the Seas woofers cost wholesale?

Should be moved to the Fight forum or left until winter arrives then we can see who can "write" their name in the snow in script...

Hi Tyson,

Its two in the morning on Wed. and I just got through making some changes to my listening room. Damn  its tuff being a neurotic audiophile. I talked with a friend that works at Moon Dance Audio about my room and which 8Th Nerve products to use and were. He also stressted to me how important it was to address the L shape part of my room and the opening that leads upstairs. These are basically echo chambers. So when I got home I moved the bass traps that were behind the speakers, which weren't really needed there and placed them in the L shape part of the room. I also took a large wall hanging and placed it over the opening on the right of the room. These two things alone made a huge difference in the tonal balance and soundstage depth and balance. For one removing the bass traps helped to lower the bass a little which helped to balance things out a bit. But were it really made a difference was helping to reduce the echo chamber effect on the left of the room, which  reduced the brighness and created a more balance soundstage. Same thing on the right of the room. I still plan on ordering the 8TH Nerve stuff to complete the tweaking of the room. Its amazing how much the room can effect the sound of a system. At this point I'm thinking by the time I complete the room treatments I shouldn't have to change my Spectron amp or even add a tube preamp.

I look forward to hearing your system and bringing over my Spectron amp and some other audiophile goodies.

Sweet :-)  I wish I could sneak in room treatments at my place, but as you'll see on Sat., there is no way that will be allowed, due to their location :-(

I'm with you Tyson, my wifey won't let me do acoustic treatments, but one of these days I will purdify it enough to let it fly under the radar.
