Dvorak - Slavonic Dances
« on: 14 Jul 2006, 10:12 pm »

I'm a classical beginner, but in the words of a recent thread, this orchestra "moves me."

I had one partial copy of Op. 46 on a Dvorak - Greatest hits set.

I recently ordered 3 complete copies from Amazon.  2 arrived today.

# Composer: Antonin Dvorak
# Conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt
# Orchestra: Chamber Orchestra of Europe
# Label: Teldec
# Audio CD (May 21, 2002)

AND

# Composer: Antonin Dvorak
# Conductor: George Szell
# Orchestra: Cleveland Orchestra
# Label: Sony
# Audio CD (January 29, 2002)

Anyway, I'll post my listening impressions soon.  It should be a good weekend.

Is anyone else a fan of these orchestras?  Can anyone recommend similar pieces / artists?  Thanks!

Try Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra for the Dvorak Slavonic dances.  I heard them do some of these live as an encore at a BBC prom and was the best version that I've heard.

I don't know about your sense of rhythm...

Antonin Dvorjak and Eddie Palmieri could have been great friends...

Dvorjak could have had a world class :drums: salsa big band like Palmieri.

Kfr - Do try Dvorak's three last symphonies if you haven't already. 7 - 8 -9  If only I could relive the experience of hearing them for the first time.  The 7th, though generally the least popular of the three, is my favorite.  The opening melody of the 8th will melt your heart, while the 9th may be the most popular symphony written by anyone, ranking up there with Tchaikovsky's 5th and 6th anyway.

I agree.   I have his Dances on a VERY-nice-sounding SACD, Philips 470 601-2.  His equally well-performed and -recorded symphonies 8 and 9 are on SACD 470 617-2.  Highly recommended.

I'll second that.  I don't have the Dances disk yet, but I have the Fischer conducted Dvorak Symphonies 8 and 9.  Both the performance and recording are excellent.

I was at that Prom.  It was one of my favourite concerts of the last decade.  Really high quality orchestra.
