FR125 vs WR125 + tweeter for 2-channel video
« on: 11 Jul 2006, 02:59 am »
I just moved my TV away from the audio system, but I'm not willing to use the TV speakers. I have a 100 wpc onkyo signal sensing amp, and need a pair of speakers for 2-channel audio use, using the TV as a preamp. I have a pair of DIY cables, kit 41 in the bedroom. A WR125 run full range with a small tweeter. I like them very much, but that's for a single listening position. For the best sound across a couch, what would be better: FR125, WR125 run full range with a small tweeter, Or a WR125 with a 2-way xover with a tweeter?
A FR125 built in a tower with a small pair of subs would be easy and cheap, a pair of RAW HT3's or DIY's exodus 641's might be better at a greater cost.

I think you'll find the off-axis response on Kevin's 641 design to be very pleasing.  Also, I can answer the "might be better" question in the affirmative.  Either the 641s or the HT3s will be a big step up over a FR125S tower with subs.

In my experience, the CSS XX125 series works -so- much better as a sealed midrange in a two or three way system than as a full-range driver.

Then again, if this is just for TV audio.. try a kit61.  It'll provide all the output you need, w/o subs, and provide nice off-axis response with the usher tweeter.  The best of both worlds.  Save the more expensive / complicated 641 or HT3 system for dedicated stereo use somewhere.  :-)

In fact, that's exactly the duty my 61s have now that the 2641s are in my stereo system.  They handle the task like a champ.  Visitors BOTH ask whether I have a subwoofer and whether I have a center channel hidden somewhere.  The bass and imaging are that good.

Cheers

For the best off axis use a 2way design at a min.
The larger the diam the driver the greater the off axis response falls off.
And if you are looking at improving off axis response this will only be done in a 2way over the fullrange.

If you really like the kit 41 use another pair of them.If the off axis is not as great as you would like you have many options for the WR driver.
No sence to use the FR and a tweeter just use the WR and a tweeter.

If you are looking at 3ways and the 641,2641 and HT3 are in your price you have options with all these.
641 is a moderate size bookshelf and will need stands.
2641 large tower
HT3 narrow ,smaller tower than the 2641

Then just a difference do you like a ribbon or a dome

Thanks for the response guys.
So the FR are out, and I think the kit 41's are too.

kfr01, the extremis and a tweeter idea is pretty good. Build them in a small tower, seal off any volume you don't need on the bottom and fill with some kind of weight.

The 2641's, too much.
The 641's, would build as a tower, and HT3's would be a better midrange version of the 2-way.

I have magnepan's in my music system, quasi-ribbon tweeter. I've never heard a non dipole ribbon tweeter.

Well, I've narrowed the list down a little.
Thanks, Ryan
