Can two sources be hooked up to one aux input?
« on: 10 Jul 2006, 03:48 pm »
Is there any way I can hook up a phono stage and cdp to an integrated with only one aux input? Is there some kind of reasonably price switching box for sale that would allow me to swich back and forth between two sources? TIA

Your phono needs to go through an RIAA equalization circuit.  That's why you have a separate phono input- it sends the phono signal through equalization, to make phono playback accurate.  Your CD should not go through any equalization circuit, or it will sound terrible.  Therefore, you cannot hook up both a phono and a CD to the same input.

If you had two sources that did not need equalization (say, a tuner & a CD player) you could use a y-adapter and just play one source at a time through your one input.  Not so with vinyl though.

Personally, I would always encourage someone to not do what you are suggesting.  That said, I will piggy-back off the info provided by the previous poster:

If you were to get a stand-alone phono pre-amp (aka phono stage), the output from this device is no different from any other source (and therfore could be successfully matched up with a CD Player).

Why not?  Connect TT to Bugle to one end of Y split end and cdp to the other.  You should be good since RIAA eq from Bugle is down stream of the split.

Conecting two line level sources to the same input through a Y adapter is not
a good idea. The source that is on sees the load of the Aux input it is plugged into and the unpowered output stage of the other source and is trying to push a signal into that output stage. You have a reverse voltage condition applied to the
output stage of the unpowered device which is not a good idea. You should buy a outboard selector switch from RS which can switch between sources ahead of the
AUX input and provide isolation between sources.
