Audio Mirror PP1 tube preamp with phonostage.
« on: 8 Jul 2006, 03:50 pm »
I'm considering the purchase of the Audio Mirror PP1 preamp and would like to know the thoughts on this preamps quality and what it might compare too. I have and still have an Audio Experience Symphonies Plus from YS audio ,and a Eastern Electric Mini-Max . I have been using the Mini-Max recently with a GE 6414 tube in the middle position, which has brought this preamp to a new level. I have recently decided to give vinyl a try now and need a phonostage,so I am seriously considering the Audio Mirror PP1 which I found a couple favorable review on. The Audio Mirror comes with SoniCaps and appears to be a good option for me if it will not step me back from my current linestages quality. My other option I have considered is a EAR-834 phono-stage and staying with current linestages with possible future upgrades to maybe a modwright.  Before deciding on getting back to vinyl I had intentions on modding the Audio Experience with some nice Caps-etc,then I played around with the Mini-Max which the new center tube made it very nice. I know I have a lot of options, and would really like to hear from Audio Mirror PP1 preamp owners or their thoughts on this Preamp.  Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you try the EE Minimax phonostage?

Since I have the EE Minimax pre w/ upgrades and the EE MM phonostage, I also am wondering why you aren't interested in the EE phonostage.
BTW, the Tungsram 6X4 or the Haltron black glass CV493 rectifier are very nice in the EE pre.
At a lower price point the Jolida JD-9 phonostage is quite nice and very versatile.

I would love to try the Eastern Electrice Phonostage, however used ones rarely come on the market and the retail price is more than  I am interested in paying for a phonostage right now. I think I am leaning more on an integrated phonostage if I can truely find one with a good linestage also. I really didn't care for the Mini-Max linestage until I replaced the center tube with the 6414 that Bill at Morningstar suggested. I can only imagine that I would be quite happy with the Eastern Electric Phonostage as their linestage is really quite excellant especially for the price. Back to my main querry, the Audio Mirror PP1.I think it is fairly new,at least this version with the better Auri or Soni caps. I have only found two reviews on A-Gon with reference to this preamp, and would really like to hear from some new owners in regards to its performance.

You have already made your decision.  Why don't you post this in the vinyl forum?
Which TT, tonearm and cartridge have you settled on ?

I have owned the Audio Mirror and auditioned the Eastern Electric in my system.  I think Eastern Electric has a better phono.  Although I did like the linestage of the Audio Mirror better.
YMMV

You are quite correct,I have made my desecsion probably 3-4 days ago,but I have been known to make several desicions in a few days and change my mind according to price, availability and performance in general.I don't have the luxury of auditioning equipment,so I generaly try to make the most informed desicion and ultimately use trial and error for my desision,as it should be. That's why I have several shelves full of audio equipment that will be sold soon.If by chance I have someone that gives me informed info on some equippment I am considering  like in this situation, it could be possible to eliminate a few items on my sell shelf, which is usually not a profitable deal for me. I have in general found that you get what you pay for, however their are a few sleepers out there. Is the Audio Mirror PP1 a sleeper?   Thanks for the info Meby.  What's your preference for a preamp and phonostage now?

The EE Mini Max Phono is really great.
Expensive but worth the price and more.
I did purchase mine used but have not seen one in awhile come up.

Musicalmaniac I currently have a Mapletree Ultra 4ASE which I received about a week ago, but I can not comment on performance yet as I am changing most of my system right now and have not lived with it long enough to comment.

Don't forget the Hagerman Clarinet line stage or Coronet phono stage.  The Clarinet, which I own, is an excellent line stage surpassing the EE in my systems.
