Speaker wire and 40`s the whole story.....
« on: 3 Jul 2006, 01:17 pm »
Last night I read my friend Chris or Ka7`s post about speaker wire and 40s. Im the friend who has gone thru a few amps searching for the right one to power his 40s. Here is the "rest of the story"

First off, I didnt weld my woofs, I barked the megas because when I first got my 40s I was preamping with a reciever that had a loudness control. Combine a loudness control with a bass cd and well you have a situation caused entirely by me, 100% my bad. Called Brian and he told me how to fix them and offered to send me new woofs but I just fixed them and they are fine.

If you look at Chris` system setup in his signature you will notice there is no transport listed in front of the Lite dac. His transport is a $39 brand X dvd player. I know for a fact he has no real digital line going to his Lite dac. Out of the dac I think he uses the IC`s which came with the brand X dvd player. While he does own the little Dared preamp he has been using a Parasound Dolby pro logic processor as a pre for about two months now. Next, while he owns a Moscode 600, for the last three months at least its been at a local techs house getting fixed. In this time he has been using an Ashley pro sound amp. Actually he has two of them. I have one of em over here. Hooked it up one day and didnt care for it at all. Big kind of glare in the mids, not even great bass. Between the Parasound and the Ashley he uses a wire built by the tech (Jessie) which is se on one end and balanced on the other end. And then from the Ashley out to the 40s he uses 14 gauge home depot wire.

Ive owned my 40s for going on 4 years. My sytem consists of the following....a Toshiba sd 5980 dvd used as a transport, then on via a Cardas Hi-speed IC into my Kora Hermes dac. The tubed output of the Kora uses pinch waist Amprex to make a really nice analog signal. Coming out of the dac I use DH labs BC-1 IC`s to either a Sonic Frontiers Line 1se or a Carver Research Lightstar direct. Cant decide which I like best. I come out of either pre with balanced Vampire wire`s better copper IC. (a very nice piece of wire) My amp is a Carver Sunfire 300 which really powers the 40s very well. From the Sunfire I bi-wire out to the 40s with 2.5 m runs of PS audio Xtreme plus (8 gauge) on the woofs and chinese (Xindak) copper/silver foil speaker wire, FS-2 I believe is the designation running the mids and tweets. My 40s are Auria cap XO and spirals. Due to having a huge room I do run a sub all the time. The sub is a Infinity Intermezzo 1.2 with rabos. I dont want for bass.

Chris, I want to come over one day and bring some different equipment for you to try. Think you will be amazed how good your 40s can sound. Anything I have here you are welcome to try. Know I was rough on ya bro, but its time for tough love.

So guys, any ideas why Chris doenst like his 40s while I love mine?

My RM 40's, even with TRT's, do not sound as good as my friend Mike's do.
It is true, my Moscode 600 is broken, and being repaired, and I do have an old Parasound P/SP 1000 John Culd pre amp that does have surround modes on them.
They are always bypassed however.
My Dared tube prem amp was revealed to not have a complimentary frequency balance for thr RM 40's, the old Parasound is MUCH smoother, and free of peaks.

Mike has generously offered to come over and bring some proven stuff to help me get the best out of my speakers.

He thinks wires may also be a problem too.

He has asked to let him tune them, as he has owned them much longer, and feels, perhaps rightfully so, that he has much more experience then me doing it.

Mike is my best friend, and only lives a couple miles away.

I think this is the wise course of action.

Thank you for your offer of help Mike.

I "don't like" my RM 40's because they do not sound as good as your's do, YET!

Room acoustics have to be the largest part of the equation outside of your speakers. Uncontrollable peaks and dips in the amplitude response must be addressed first. Any fine tuning should be done after the room has been modified as much as you are able to.  A digital equalizer can go a long ways for little money too.

I'd not do anything until I worked with my room first.  I know on my system I can change the presentation of the RM 40's all over the place, good and bad. Room acoustics and a digital equalizer properly utilized will get you 90% of the way there.  Just my .02 cents of course.

First, you two look like you're haveing too much fun :duel:

Second Tunz, welcome to the VMPS forum.  From your first post it looks like you'll fit in quite well.

Having two pair of RM40s that close to gether might create a disturbance in the "infinte-continuum" if played at the same time above 98db, so be careful, but do report your progress.
