Dussun V8i & SP Tech Time Piece 2.1
« on: 25 Jun 2006, 05:46 pm »
I have a hunch that the Dussun V8i mated with the SP Tech Time Piece 2.1 would have great synergy together. I hope someone has a chance to mate these two components.

Why would you think that?

I had a get-together with Bob and others at my place awhile back. We listened to his Continuum speakers mated with the Belles Ref. 350A and SAS 10A preamplifer. Those components had great synergy together. I liken the Dussun to the Belles in its ability to handle difficult loads like the Continuums and Maggies. The Dussun also mates very well with the SAS 10A. In fact, on my Maggies, I'm not sure which amplifier I prefer. Its very close. So my hunch is that the Dussun and SP tech speakers would have a similar synergy.

Interesting.

If I recall correctly, you auditioned a pair of new, unbroken-in Continuums.  Bob doesn't believe his speakers need more than 3-4 hours of break-in time, and he probably felt they were close to being full-up rounds after an hour or so.  That's too bad, because Bob is wrong, and his assertions to that effect give people the idea they're hearing the best his speakers have to offer.  Not a great way to build a customer base.   :shake:

No offense intended, but unless you heard a well-worn pair of Bob's speakers, you didn't hear what they're capable of.  I know, because I've been there/done that with his speakers more than once.  I don't doubt it was decent, but as someone who is more familiar with actually listening to SP Tech speakers than their creator, I know from experience that an SP Tech speaker with 300 or more hours on it will sound much better than one that doesn't.

Furthermore, according to Bob, his latest (and hopefully, last) tweaks to the crossovers were revelatory.  They involve things he tried early on, but had to abandon because he couldn't get them to work quite the way he wanted.  Apparently that's no longer the case.  He now says the entire MRS line is *MUCH* easier to drive, and that their performance is significantly improved.  He tells me I'm in for a surprise.

As no one besides Bob and his crew has heard these changes, we shall see.  I will post my findings after the 2.1s return from Indiana.

I look forward to your impressions and I hope to unite with Bob in the future to test my hunch.

If it's a good as some say, it probably will mate well with the 2.1s...or any of the MRS line for that matter.

That is, assuming Bob's right about his latest findings.

I would have to say that there are not many speakers in general that reach their potential within an hour or so, not even several hours. I would be more confident of the presentation after a minimum of 200 hours but prefer to have 300-400 hours on speakers before critically evaluating their performance. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way (obviously).
The pair of Continuums I have here arrived with a few hundred hours already on them so I cannot comment on the break-in cycle.
All I can say is that if you like them out of the box, you are in for one hell of a surprise after a few hundred hours.

With that I am in wholehearted agreement.

Double Ugly, I received a call from Bob today about his new crossever design on his MRS line. He stated that he felt the new design is a big improvement over the older crossover design and that the speakers should not dip below 6ohm at any frequency. He stated that his past MRS line would dip as low as 2ohms and thus required high-powered amplifiers with a high damping factor to get the best from them. Bob and I planned to unite again to listen to his new MRS line Time Piece speakers. I plan on using the Odyssey Khartago Monos and the Dussun V8i amplifier with the new Time Piece 2.1 speakers.
