Boston Audio Design MAT 1
« on: 25 Jun 2006, 03:25 pm »
I picked up a Boston Audio Design MAT 1 for my Nottingham Interspace turntable, to replace the stock foam pad.  Initial impressions using the carbon fiber mat are very impressive.

I'll be spinning some more vinyl this afternoon and will share some thoughts with AC members.

Regards,

Have you tried any other Mats on the Spacedeck?  If so, how does the Boston compare?

I have tried the Extreme Phono donut, Ringmat, and some home brews.  Nothing compares to the MAT 1.  Please note this is an Interspace turntable, I wish I had the Spacedeck.

The MAT 1 imparts a very black background and seems to suck up a lot of extraneous noise that vinyl can impart in a two-channel system.  I get a better sense of the physical recording venue and a deeper soundstage.

Primarily, the MAT 1 simply produces recorded voices and instrumentals a lot cleaner, particulary at frequency extremes.  While I don't think I am hearing expanded frequency response, the deep bass notes and treble are produced with a lot less noise, it almost seems so.

To steal a quote from Bill O'Connell from Morningstar Audio posted on the Boston Audio Design site:

"Your Mat is a winner. It has taken my vinyl playback to a clearer, tauter, lower noise floor (silent) appreciation level."

I could not have said it any better in so few words.

Amen to being an improvement. The Mat 1 also does well on the Clearaudio table i reviewed for Enjoy the Music.com. Without the Mat the table was good and all, though the Mat truly brought about a positive change.
