Has anyone received a RAM modified Oppo DV-970HD?  I am interested in how this unit performs and sounds.

Just when I thought I had settled on the TRL modified Sony DVP- NS900V New Upgrade w/ Battery Power Supply.

FYI, both the RAM battery powered SA-11 and the standard mod TRL 900 were in the same room at CES. Those in the room chose the $750 mod price TRL Sony 900 over the $9K mod price RAM SA-11. The difference between the standard mod and the battery mod upgrade on the Sony is major. I just wish it wasn't such a cheap looking plastic chassis.

Same question I've been asking myself the past couple days.....tho it may sound quite good, I have some issues with a $1000 mod on a $150 machine.  If the transport goes kaput (it's cheap to start out for a reason), out goes your investment in better tunes.

A vexing problem.... :bawl:

The RAM SA-11 Battery powered unit at CES wasn't working correctly. We did not have a representative there from RAM in that room so we had to rely on others to operate the unit.  It was found to have a dead battery in it because it was left on for too long prior to the show and it wasnt recharged. It was returned to us after the show with this problem and it killed the sound totally. We revived it with a new replacement battery and it was night/day afterwards.

Here is what Beavers had to say about the comparison:

Thanx for the link. But JB doesn't indicate a battery power to battery power comparison. I saw in another post that you bought JB's player and it wasn't battery powered.

Hi Doug (Jessie)...

Will the Oppo stand up to the abuse of opening the drawer several hundred times yearly in your estimation?  Is their an alternative in your mind for similar money that you offer there?

The Samsung or Toshiba better choices....they feel pretty flimsy to me, as well.

Thanks.

JB sold me his player before he had a chance to do that comparison. The previous link mentioned the standard TRL 900V before upgrades vs. the RAM Marantz with battery power supply.

I havn't decided yet. I will wait to here back from Brian Kyle. He will be doing a direct A/B comparison of the TRL 900V upgrade vs. the TRL 900V upgrade with battery power supply. I can't imagine it being that much better. Paul said its like sex. "Imagination is great, but until you experience sex, you have no idea!"

Using the TRL Sony 900V is like having sex? Do I have to wear a condom while I listen?

Hi there,

I own the Oppo DV-971H for over a year now and my wife watched DVD after DVD day after day. She might open/close the transport 2-3 times a day, and more if music is being played. Not a single glitch with the transport.

I also own (RAM Demo) fully modded Samsung HD-950 that is closing in on 1 year old and been through alot of abuse (opening/closing of the transport) and it is on 24/7 playing a disc on repeat and not a single glitch either. I have modified over 30 HD-950's all with a problem with the transport failing or acting quirky.

The problems with the transport were related to the older Toshiba 3950, 3960 and even the 3980 players. I must had about a half dozen returned to me within 6 months of use, and I swapped all the parts either into a Samsung HD-841, HD-850 or HD-950 and all are still playing with a issue.

The nice thing about Oppo is they have the best customer service. One of my clients got a oppo dv-970hd and there was a problem with the unit (this was the one of the first ones out, there was a quick firmware fix), but instead of him updating the firmware, Oppo just sent him a new unit, free of charge. I have talked to them and they said if there was any issues they would back me up, no problem with anything I needed.  Thats alot better than dealing with samsung or toshiba who are so big that you dont get the same quality service as you would get from a smaller company like Oppo. (The presentation of the Oppo is much better, the nice case, the cables, the box, everything is on a higher level).

Thanks!

I'm a happily married man. I haven't worn a condom in years. Do they still sell magnums?

I don't know Tvad. I havn't heard the battery option. I have been married 16 years and can't remember ever wearing a condom. But if you think a condom would help, ....? :bomb:
