I'm curious to know if anyone, Vinnie included, ever did a/b test of the digital out from the USB select into a DAC versus the digital out of the Squeezebox, modded or not into the same DAC?

If you have done such a test, what was the result?

Hi Loftprojection,

The digital output of the battery modded SB vs the USB Select is VERY similar sounding...both are really excellent used as transports.  If you plan to use either one as a transport for your external dac, I would make your decision based on if you want to interface with a Squeezebox (which can be done wirelessly or via Ethernet cable) or if you rather use USB and connect directly to your computer (which will probably be in the same room).

Hope this helps,

Vinnie

Thanks much Vinnie.  I'm currently using a HagUSB which is not equivalent to my CDP (Arcam CD23T) used as a transport into my DAC.  So I'm researching other options as I'd really like to get rid of my CDP transport in favor of full PC music.  However I'm not willing to compromise sound quality, even if minimal.

Hi loftprojection,

The only other unit that I offer that has an even better sounding digital output is the battery modded Olive Symphony/Musica:
http://www.redwineaudio.com/Olive.html
I don't know what I'll ever come out with to top this one in the future.

One of the dacs that I had the chance to compare the battery modded SB to the modded Olive was the digital input of a Wadia player (this was the same day I had the chance to power a pair of Gallo Ref 3s with my Signature 30 and it was a very fun day of listening!)  There was clearly more focus, more space, and a more natural top end using the modded Olive as the source.

Best regards,

Vinni, are you saying the digital output from your modded Olive is better then the digital output form your modded Squeezebox?

Hi MikeLa,

Welcome to Audiocircle!

Yes, the modded Olive's digital output is superior to that of my modded Squeezebox and it is also superior to the digital output of the USB Select.

Best regards,

Vinnie
