Cable interaction question
« on: 11 Jun 2006, 05:12 pm »
I am trying some new cables in my system. When I insert the new cables between my DAC and Preamp everthing is fine. When I insert them between my pre and amp, i hear a lot of noise when I initially power up the pre or the amp (whizzing, clicking etc). they are then quiet once the unit is on. I hear no such noise when I place my old cables back in the system. What might the issue be?

The only thing I could guess is to try waiting a bit ( 2 minutes or so )  before turning on the amp to let the preamp settle in a touch. Maynot help but its worth a shot. I always turn on my linestage for about 5 minutes before I turn on my amps. Just a habit  I got into.....

RF oscillation

Hi Eric,

Sounds like a typical RF oscillation in the amp during warmup. Characteristics change with temp, voltages etc. When the amp stabilizes, the oscillation stops.

Typical symptoms include noise, hiss through tweeter, clicking, distortion of music etc, depending on strength of oscillation. I have a SS monoblock amp right now that has a moderate RF oscillation on the negative portion of the signal waveform, gradually diminishing to 0 at 6 watts output.

Hope this helps.
